The English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS), Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), held a Career Development Series seminar titled “Preparing Today for a Better Tomorrow” on Sunday, June 7, 2026, in Room 106, Building B1, FBS UNNES.
The event was part of the final project for the English for Business Purposes course, supervised by Zuhrul Anam, S.S., M.Hum. and Thohiriyah, S.S., M.Hum. The seminar aimed to provide students with insights into preparing for further studies, entering the workforce, and navigating challenges after graduation.
Running from 9:00 AM local time, the seminar featured three speakers with diverse backgrounds and experiences. The first speaker, Annisa Widyawati Fathonah, S.S., M.A., presented material on preparing for master’s degree studies through scholarship programs. She shared her personal experience in obtaining a scholarship and outlined strategies students can prepare from an early stage.
“Scholarship preparation cannot be done instantly. Students need to start building their academic track record, developing foreign language skills, and actively participating in various self-development activities,” she explained.
This discussion on access to higher education through scholarships aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) point 4 on Quality Education, which promotes equal access to education for all.
The second speaker, Erviyan Ragil Wicaksono, S.S., delivered a session titled “Preparing for the World of Work from a Government Employee’s Perspective.” Drawing from his experience as a state civil apparatus, Erviyan explained the competencies students need to face the professional world, particularly in the government sector.
“Students need to start preparing themselves while still in college, both by improving technical skills and the interpersonal abilities required in the professional world,” he said.
According to Erviyan, events like this are important to continue because they help students gain a realistic picture of various career options after graduation.
The discussion on work readiness supports SDG point 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, specifically in preparing a competent and competitive young generation.
The final session was delivered by Muhammad Raihan Adi Madana, S.S., with the topic “Fresh Graduate Concerns.” Raihan invited participants to understand various challenges often faced by new graduates, from job-seeking anxiety to the adaptation process in a work environment.
“You don’t have to wait to be perfect to start. Every small step you take today is part of building your future career,” he advised seminar participants.
The head of the event organizing committee, Reno Candra Setiawan, an English Literature student at UNNES, said that the seminar was not only part of the course assessment but also served as a platform for students to learn how to organize beneficial activities for their peers.
“We hope this event can help students become better prepared for post-campus life and provide an overview of the various opportunities they can achieve in the future,” he said.
Through the organization of the Career Development Series, English Literature students of FBS UNNES not only gained insights into further education and the professional world but also developed collaboration, leadership, and care for the career readiness of the younger generation. This activity also supports the implementation of SDG point 17 on Partnerships for the Goals through collaboration between students, lecturers, and alumni in creating a learning environment relevant to future needs.
