Brief Profile

The Master of History Study Program Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) is a study program that focuses on developing knowledge in the field of historical studies to produce innovative and tested works, solve problems through interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary studies, and manage research and development that is useful and reputable nationally and globally.

The uniqueness of the Historical Studies study program, which differentiates it from the Historical Studies study program, lies in contextualizing historical knowledge in today’s life. Therefore, the focus of work in the Master of History Study Program is on mastering historical knowledge and its application in contemporary life. An area appropriate to the Historical Studies program is mainstreaming public history by emphasizing a transdisciplinary approach. General history discusses how the past is present in the memory and imagination of the wider community today. This differs from the Master in History that has existed so far, where Historical Studies will develop applied history for the public community and use a digital approach. In this context, applied history is about utilizing problem findings, which are used to build synergies between scientific development and benefits for society and national development. The reach of historical studies is local, national, and global.

Thus, the Body of Knowledge organized by the Universitas Negeri Semarang Masters Study Program in History covers history, public history, and other studies that align with historical scholarship. The developed knowledge still correlates with the previous educational strata, namely Bachelor of Science in History at the Faculty of History, Universitas Negeri Semarang. It’s just that there are additional digital history-based public history studies that will become one of the primary studies in the Master of Historical Studies.

The development of historical knowledge, which is a follow-up to the development of world knowledge, makes studies in the Master of History Studies an excellent continuation of education from the Bachelor’s level. Apart from that, developing knowledge in historical scholarship will be pursued through emerging trends in historical studies, especially public history published in reputable journals. Apart from that, this development will also be combined with internal research by lecturers from the UNNES History Department, starting from research on campus to outside campus on a national and international scale. Moreover, placing the main focus on public history, which is the main study of the Master’s Study Program, makes the knowledge that will be developed more focused and tends not to range into other aspects outside the study of public history.
