In commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of Universitas Negeri Semarang (FISIP UNNES) organized journalism training for students as part of its commitment to promoting freedom of expression, media literacy, and the strengthening of democratic values within the academic environment. The event, entitled “DIALOG KOMUNIKA,” was organized by the Communication Studies Student Association (HIMA IKOM) on 23 May 2026 at the 3rd Floor Hall of Building C7, FISIP UNNES.
Carrying the theme “The Art of Speaking on Social Media: Between Criticism, Creativity, and Ethics,” the event featured speakers from both media practitioners and academics, namely Baihaqi from Tirto.id and Herlina Kusumaningrum, a lecturer in Communication Studies at Diponegoro University. The seminar and discussion sessions were conducted interactively, focusing on how students can express criticism, ideas, and opinions creatively on social media while still maintaining communication ethics and social responsibility.
The event also served as part of the strengthening of partnerships between FISIP UNNES and various media institutions that have established collaborations with the Communication Studies Program. This collaboration represents a continuation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) previously established and supports student internship programs in media institutions and the press industry, in line with the Higher Education Key Performance Indicators (IKU) related to off-campus learning experiences.
Through this activity, FISIP UNNES reaffirmed its role as an educational institution that promotes a culture of dialogue, digital literacy, and responsible freedom of expression. Furthermore, the event contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4: Quality Education, through the strengthening of students’ media literacy and communication competencies, as well as Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, through the promotion of democratic values, press freedom, and ethical public communication in the digital era.
