The English Literature and English Language Education Study Programs at Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) carried out a library collection sorting activity on 23 August 2025. The activity involved student assistance and aimed to update old book collections with new publications. Most of these English-language books were donations from graduating students, and their presence is expected to continue benefiting active students in completing assignments, articles, and theses.
This collection update not only impacts the UNNES academic community but also opens access for the general public. Members of the public can utilize the library collection by registering directly with the librarian on duty. This service is available free of charge. However, borrowing books to be taken outside the library environment is currently not included in the available service items.
The library of the English Literature and English Language Education Study Programs at FBS UNNES is strategically located and easily accessible. The public can reach the location through the back gate of UNNES, either via the main road or the UNNES pedestrian bridge provided for walkers. The bridge connects the outer campus area and other faculties with FBS UNNES as the closest and most accessible faculty. These two access points represent UNNES’s commitment and contribution to providing quality services for the general public.
Dr. Burhanudin, S.S., M.A., Vice Dean II of FBS UNNES, expressed his appreciation for the initiative. According to him, the library collection update and expanded public access reflect the faculty’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable education. “This step is a concrete manifestation of our dedication to serving not only our students but also the wider community. By updating the collection and opening access, we ensure that knowledge remains alive and beneficial. This also aligns with our conservation spirit and supports the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 11 on sustainable cities and communities,” he stated.
Dr. Rahayu Puji Haryanti, M.Hum., Head of the English Literature Study Program, added that the renewal of the collection is expected to enrich academic resources for students and the public alike. “We are delighted to see the library evolving into a more dynamic learning space. The donated books from our graduating students are a valuable legacy that will continue to inspire and support the academic journey of others. We welcome the public to make use of this facility,” she said.
Meanwhile, Yuliati, S.Pd., M.Pd., M.Ed., Ph.D., Head of the English Language Education Study Program, emphasized the importance of collaboration and service. “This activity is a testament to our shared commitment to quality education and community engagement. By providing free access and a comfortable reading environment, we hope to foster a culture of lifelong learning. We also thank the students and librarians who have contributed to this effort,” she remarked.
This initiative to update the collection and expand access to services is also a tangible effort to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 11 on sustainable cities and communities. By presenting an inclusive, easily accessible, and publicly open learning space, UNNES contributes to creating a sustainable educational environment and strengthens the role of higher education institutions as centers of knowledge for the wider community.
