The Subdirectorate of Conservation of Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) organized an environmental campaign to commemorate National Nature Conservation Day (HKAN) 2026 during the Car Free Day (CFD) event at Simpang Lima, Semarang, on Sunday, August 9, 2026. The program aimed to encourage the community to become more aware of environmental conservation and food security through simple actions that can be implemented at home.
During the event, UNNES distributed 500 vegetable seedlings to members of the public. The seedlings were produced through UNNES Ecofarm and the Subdirectorate of Conservation as part of an initiative to promote home gardening and sustainable household food production.
In addition to seedling distribution, the conservation team conducted educational outreach on environmental conservation, green space management, and the cultivation of productive plants in residential areas. The public response was highly positive, with all 500 seedlings being distributed within a short time.
The environmental campaign featured a public address by Dr. Ir. Ananto Aji, M.S., Head of the Section for Values, Character, Arts, and Culture at the UNNES Subdirectorate of Conservation. During his speech, he encouraged the public to make conservation part of their everyday lifestyle.
“Conservation does not always begin with large-scale actions. Growing vegetables in home gardens is a simple form of conservation that brings significant benefits for both the environment and household food security. We want to encourage people to start with small but sustainable actions,” said Dr. Ananto Aji.
He further explained that the use of household land for cultivation provides not only economic benefits but also contributes to creating greener and healthier surroundings. “When communities start planting and utilizing available spaces around their homes, they are not only meeting their food needs but also contributing to a more sustainable environment,” he added.
Through this campaign, UNNES reaffirmed its commitment as a conservation-oriented university that actively promotes environmental awareness among the public. The HKAN 2026 campaign is expected to inspire collective action in protecting the environment while strengthening urban food security.
This activity supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
