The Community Service Team from Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) conducted a sustainable household waste management empowerment program with the PKK group of RT 04 RW 08, Genuk Village, Semarang City, on Sunday, August 9, 2026. The initiative, titled “Empowerment of PKK Women in RT 04 RW 08 Genuk Village through Eco-Enzyme Innovation as a Sustainable Household Waste Management Solution,” was led by Prof. Dr. F. Widhi Mahatmanti, M.Si., alongside FMIPA UNNES faculty members Dr. Nuni Widiarti, S.Pd., M.Si., Samuel Budi Wardhana K., Ph.D., and Dian Sri Asmorowati, M.Pd., with support from three students. The program aimed to enhance community knowledge, practical skills, and capacity to reduce household organic waste.
The training program consisted of three core sessions: education on waste sorting at the source, an introduction to eco-enzyme principles, and hands-on production practice. Participants learned to process household fruit peels and organic scraps using a mixture of palm/brown sugar and water at a 1:3:10 ratio. Team Leader Prof. Dr. F. Widhi Mahatmanti, M.Si., emphasized the importance of this hands-on approach to fostering community self-reliance. “Through direct practice, household waste is no longer viewed merely as refuse, but as a resource that can be independently repurposed at home,” she stated. Participants demonstrated great enthusiasm throughout the interactive session, marking an effective knowledge-sharing process between higher education academics and local residents.
This organic waste management innovation aligns directly with three key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). First, it supports Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12) by encouraging the reuse of organic materials before disposal. Second, the program contributes to Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11) by fostering cleaner and less waste-dense residential environments. Finally, the initiative embodies Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17) through active collaboration between FMIPA UNNES academics and grass-roots community organizations.
