The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) is strengthening its international academic network through research and teaching collaboration with the University of Vienna, Austria.
The collaboration was discussed during an academic meeting between Fadly Husain, a lecturer in Medical Anthropology and Social Conservation at FISIP, and Yuki Seidler, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of Vienna. The meeting took place on September 21, 2026, during Fadly Husain’s visit as an Invited Researcher at the Department of Environmental Health, Center for Public Health, Medical University of Vienna. Fadly Husain also serves as Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs at FISIP.
The meeting discussed opportunities to develop joint research and teaching collaboration by bringing together perspectives from social sciences, public health, culture, and global health policy. One of the outcomes of the meeting was a plan to develop a joint international research project, which is targeted to begin next year.
The research will examine the relationship between health, culture, and society within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-being. The research is planned to involve three to four international partners from Austria, Japan, Pakistan, and Indonesia, with FISIP representing Indonesia.
The cross-country collaboration is expected to generate comparative perspectives on the relationship between health, cultural practices, social conditions, and public policy. In addition to research, the collaboration also creates opportunities for joint scientific publications and the development of academic networks among participating institutions.
The collaboration is not limited to research. The two scholars also discussed opportunities for teaching cooperation and academic exchange. Yuki Seidler is expected to participate in online academic activities for FISIP students, particularly on qualitative research methods and global health policy.
The involvement of an international scholar in teaching activities is expected to broaden students’ perspectives on qualitative approaches in social and political research, as well as contemporary issues in global health governance. The collaboration is also part of FISIP’s efforts to internationalize its learning environment.
Yuki Seidler has an interdisciplinary academic background spanning public health, international relations, and policy studies. She completed her Doctorate in Public Health at the Medical University of Vienna in 2021.
Previously, she earned a Master of Science in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2011, a Master of Arts in International Relations from the Australian National University in 2000, and a Bachelor of Arts in Policy Studies from Chuo University, Tokyo, in 1997.
Her academic and research interests include qualitative, interpretive, and participatory research, public health, and implementation science. This interdisciplinary background provides a foundation for developing collaboration with FISIP, particularly in research that brings together issues of health, society, culture, and public policy.
The meeting forms part of FISIP’s efforts to expand international partnerships in education and research. The planned collaboration is expected to create opportunities for lecturers and students to participate in cross-border academic activities.
Through this expanding academic network, FISIP seeks to strengthen its contribution to international academic collaboration while supporting the achievement of SDG 3 through interdisciplinary research connecting health, culture, society, and public policy.
