Semarang – Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) conferred degrees upon 1,500 graduates during its 140th Commencement Ceremony on Saturday (18 July). The graduates were encouraged to apply their knowledge and expertise to make meaningful contributions to society, the nation, and the global community.
The 140th Commencement Ceremony marked an important milestone for the graduates as they completed their academic journey at UNNES. More than a celebration of academic achievement, the ceremony also signified the beginning of a new chapter in which graduates are expected to continue developing themselves and addressing future challenges with confidence and integrity.
A total of 1,500 graduates participated in the commencement ceremony, comprising 1,349 bachelor’s degree graduates, 124 master’s degree graduates, 23 doctoral graduates, three diploma graduates, and one professional program graduate.
UNNES Rector, Prof. Dr. S. Martono, M.Si., extended his congratulations to all graduates for successfully completing their studies. He also expressed his sincere appreciation to the parents and families whose unwavering support had enabled the graduates to reach this important milestone.
According to the Rector, the graduates’ achievements are the result of years of perseverance, dedication, and hard work throughout their academic journey. During their time at UNNES, students were equipped not only with academic knowledge but also with character development, professional networking opportunities, and meaningful learning experiences that prepared them for life beyond the university.
“What you have achieved today is an accomplishment worthy of both pride and gratitude. I fully understand that reaching this milestone has required extraordinary perseverance and determination,” the Rector said.
In his address, the Rector also highlighted the importance of the Impactful Education paradigm promoted by Indonesia’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology. He emphasized that higher education should not merely serve as a provider of knowledge but should also function as a driving force for social, economic, and ecological transformation.
He encouraged graduates to put the knowledge and skills they had acquired into practice by making tangible contributions to society. To achieve this, he outlined three strategic principles for creating meaningful impact.
First, transform knowledge into solutions. Second, turn personal success into collective progress. Third, view one’s identity as a UNNES alumnus as a responsibility to uphold the university’s reputation.
Through the 140th Commencement Ceremony, UNNES reaffirmed its commitment to producing graduates who possess not only academic excellence but also a strong sense of social responsibility. The university hopes that the knowledge, values, and experiences gained during their studies will serve as a solid foundation for graduates to create positive change and contribute meaningfully to society in various professional fields.
The 140th Commencement Ceremony reflects UNNES’s commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) by producing competent and socially responsible graduates, SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by preparing highly skilled human resources for the workforce, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through strengthening collaboration between higher education institutions, graduates, and society to create sustainable development and long-term social impact.
