The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) has taken a concrete step toward creating a healthier campus environment by installing Smoke-Free Zone (KTR) signage across the faculty area. This initiative is part of the implementation of the smoke-free campus policy based on Rector Regulation No. 111 of 2024, which applies to all areas within UNNES.
The presence of these no-smoking signs serves not only as a regulation marker but also as an educational tool for the academic community and campus visitors to maintain a clean and healthy environment. The policy prohibits both conventional cigarettes and electronic smoking devices, aiming to protect individuals from exposure to harmful tobacco smoke.
The faculty emphasized that universities have a moral responsibility to promote healthy lifestyles by setting a good example. Therefore, the implementation of this policy prioritizes awareness and educational approaches, alongside regulatory enforcement and sanctions to ensure compliance.
The policy has received mixed responses from students. Many support the initiative, as it enhances comfort and safety within the academic environment. However, some have suggested the provision of designated smoking areas to ensure that the policy can be implemented more effectively and inclusively.
More broadly, the implementation of smoke-free zones at FISIP UNNES aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by improving environmental health, SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by creating healthier public spaces, and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by reducing air pollution. A smoke-free campus contributes significantly to building a sustainable, safe, and high-quality academic environment.
