Exploring English Literature Major: From Literature to Linguistics

For those of you who are great at or really love speaking English, you must have been confused when asked to choose a college major, right? Should you choose English Education or English Literature?

English Literature Major 

This major goes far beyond basic grammar, it invites you to dive into the intricacies of history, the nuance of language, and professional practices in the creative industry. To give you a clearer picture, here is an outline of what you will study:

1. Core Skill Cluster (Basic Language Skills) 

At the beginning of your studies, your language foundation will be strengthened to a native speaker level. You will study subjects such as:

  • Pronunciation Focus: English Phonetics (Segmental & Suprasegmental) and Pronunciation Practice.
  • Grammar & Vocabulary Focus: Word, Phrase, and Clause Grammar, English Morphology, and Word-based Lexical Studies.

2. Literature and Cultural Studies Cluster 

This is the soul of the major! You will be invited to dissect both classic and modern literary masterpieces, though:

  • Work Analysis: Poetry Analysis, Prose Analysis, and Drama Analysis.
  • In-depth Studies: History of the English Literature and Culture, Literary Criticism, American/British Studies, to thematic literature such as Travel Literature, Children’s Literature, and Popular Literature and Film.

3. Linguistics Cluster (Science of Language) 

For those of you who like to analyze the structure and meaning of language scientifically, you will fall in love with these subjects:

  • Introduction to Linguistics, English Semantics (the study of word meanings), and English Syntax (sentence structure).

4. Professional Practice Cluster (Work-Ready!)

 English Literature is not always about ancient books. In the upper semesters, you will be prepared for modern industry through hands on workshops and practices:

  • Translation Field: Translating, Interpreting, Workshop on Subtitling, and Workshop on Dubbing.
  • Media & Journalism Field: Digital Journalistic Writing, Content and Copy Writing Workshop, News Reporting, to Public Relations.
  • Additional Foreign Languages Field: Basic Japanese/Arabic/Mandarin.
