KARIMUNJAWA – A team from the Mathematics Group of Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) conducted a community service program entitled “Improving Teachers’ Understanding of Deep Learning and Canva-Assisted Technology for SMK Negeri 1 Karimunjawa Teachers”.
The activity was attended by teachers of SMK Negeri 1 Karimunjawa as an effort to strengthen educators’ competence in developing learning media that are more creative, effective, and relevant to the needs of 21st-century education.
Through this activity, teachers received mentoring on the concept of deep learning and hands-on practice in using Canva as a digital platform for creating visual learning media. Participants were also guided to explore various available features so they could apply them in classroom learning.
This activity is related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 on Quality Education. The training supports teacher capacity building in designing learning that is more meaningful, engaging, and relevant to students’ needs.
The Principal of SMK Negeri 1 Karimunjawa, Akhmad Wahid Juneidi, said that the participants were active and responsive throughout the activity. He explained that the use of Canva can help teachers create visual learning media in a more attractive and efficient way.
He hoped that the knowledge gained from the activity could be directly implemented in the teaching and learning process. In this way, the quality of education in Karimunjawa can continue to improve through more innovative and adaptive learning.
Vice Rector I of UNNES, Prof. Dr. Zaenuri, stated that this community service activity served as a strategic effort to improve teacher competence, especially in island areas such as Karimunjawa. Strengthening teachers’ understanding of deep learning is considered important because the approach is relevant to the direction of 21st-century education.
In addition to the introduction to deep learning, participants also received material on the use of Canva delivered by Ratna Nur Mustika Sanusi. The session helped teachers understand how to develop digital learning media that are more communicative, visual, and practical for classroom use.
The use of learning technology in this activity is also connected to SDG 9 on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, particularly in the aspect of digital-based learning innovation. Canva was introduced as a tool to help teachers prepare more interactive teaching materials and support learning transformation at school.
The workshop also featured Prof. Dr. St. Budi Waluya, who delivered material on deep learning. The session strengthened teachers’ understanding of how to design learning that does not only focus on delivering material, but also encourages deeper understanding among students.
Through this activity, UNNES demonstrated its commitment to supporting the professional development of teachers in various regions, including island areas. This community service program is expected to become an initial step for SMK Negeri 1 Karimunjawa teachers in developing learning that is more creative, adaptive, and technology-based.
This activity also reflects UNNES’ contribution to SDG 4 and SDG 9 through teacher capacity building, the strengthening of 21st-century learning, and the use of digital technology to support educational quality.
