Students of the Community Service Program (KKN) GIAT 16 at Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) introduced an appropriate technology innovation in the form of a rocket stove to overcome waste management issues in Kebondalem Village, Bawang District, Banjarnegara Regency. The limited availability of a Final Disposal Site (TPA) in the area, coupled with the abundant potential of organic and biomass waste from the agricultural and livestock sectors, prompted the students to create an alternative for utilizing local resources. Through this dedicated program, the community was introduced to a specially designed combustion stove capable of transforming dry twigs, wood cuts, and other scattered biomass residues into highly efficient fuel.

During its implementation, the KKN students guided residents in building the rocket stove using simple, easily accessible materials around the village. The stove is engineered to optimize airflow into the combustion chamber, producing a more stable flame and concentrated heat compared to conventional stoves. A representative of the UNNES KKN GIAT 16 team stated that the program is not just about building a device but serves as an environmental management educational platform. “We designed this rocket stove with simple materials so that residents can build it independently according to their household needs. The main education here is proper waste sorting; we strongly emphasize that waste like plastic should not be burned to avoid harmful gas emissions. We hope the accumulated biomass waste can be transformed into valuable alternative energy,” the representative explained during the activity.

The introduction of this rocket stove innovation tangibly supports the acceleration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across three crucial sectors. First, this initiative represents Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7) through the utilization of biomass as a cost-effective and easily accessible alternative energy source for the rural community. Second, the program directly contributes to Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12) by repurposing agricultural waste into functional fuel that previously had no utility value. Finally, the combustion efficiency of this stove technology aligns with Climate Action (SDG 13), where optimal fuel usage and the prevention of indiscriminate plastic burning serve as smart steps with a massive impact on sustainable village environmental preservation.
