A total of 1,255 new students from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Political Science (FISIP) of Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) filled the Kalisegoro field in Gunungpati. Wearing red shirts, they took part in the annual event titled Tree Planting Together, as part of the university’s commitment to environmental conservation.
Dean of FISIP, Prof. Arif, emphasized that this activity is a concrete manifestation of UNNES’s vision as a conservation-minded university. “Planting trees is a small step with a big impact. It is part of our effort to preserve nature for the benefit of humanity,” he said on Friday, October 10, 2025.
Before the event began, students received guidance from Teguh Prihantono, Head of Natural Resources and Environment Section, Sub-Directorate of Conservation, Directorate of Academics, Student Affairs, and Conservation of UNNES. “Each group consists of three people. The tree should be planted in the prepared holes, the polybag removed, and then photographed for documentation,” he explained.
After the briefing, students dispersed around the Kalisegoro area. Under the morning sun, they planted the prepared seedlings with great enthusiasm, creating a lively and collaborative atmosphere.
Muhammad Syahrul, a History student, expressed his joy in contributing to the environment. “I planted a mango tree. I hope it grows well and benefits many people,” he said.
Meanwhile, Fathira, a Communication Science student, hoped that the palm tree she planted would beautify the area. “I hope it grows well and makes this place greener,” she added.
In total, 410 trees were planted, consisting of various species, including Salam (50), Tabebuya (50), Kawista (10), Talijiwo (50), Pulai (50), Mango (40), Longan (40), Sapodilla (40), Mangosteen (40), and Avocado (40).
Participants in this event were new FISIP students from several study programs: History Education (90 students), History (92), Geography Education (94), Geography (210), Civic Education (138), Political Science (231), Sociology and Anthropology Education (146), Social Studies Education (139), and Communication Science (115).
This annual tree-planting tradition serves as a medium for FISIP UNNES to instill conservation values in new students while strengthening the university’s role as a pioneer of environmental preservation in the Gunungpati area.
Through this activity, FISIP UNNES also contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 13: Climate Action, Goal 15: Life on Land, and Goal 4: Quality Education. The tree planting not only helps reduce carbon emissions and maintain ecological balance but also serves as an educational effort to instill conservation values and social responsibility among students toward environmental sustainability.
