Semarang, Indonesia — The Faculty of Engineering at Universitas Negeri Semarang (FT UNNES), in collaboration with academics from Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), Malaysia, held an academic discussion on integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into higher education and developing sustainable curricula. The event took place on Monday, October 26, 2026, at the FT UNNES Dean’s Office, Sekaran Campus, Gunungpati, Semarang.

The discussion was part of the Inbound Visiting Lecturer Program, featuring three UMPSA academics: Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Amir Abdul Razak, Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Nasrul Hadi bin Johari, and Ts. Dr. Luqman Hakim Bin Ahmad Shah.

The event began with a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) entitled “Advancing the SDGs through Higher Education: Global Perspectives on Curriculum Innovation and Sustainable Development.” The session explored the role of universities in supporting sustainable development, particularly through curriculum innovation and the integration of sustainability principles into higher education.

Participants included study program coordinators, faculty members, and representatives of the Public Relations and SDGs units at FT UNNES. Their involvement created opportunities to examine curriculum development from institutional, academic, and educational perspectives.

The program continued with a session entitled “Collaborative Dialogue on Sustainable Curriculum Development in Higher Education.” This dialogue focused on exchanging perspectives on curriculum development that incorporates sustainability principles while responding to evolving technological advancements and the competencies expected of university graduates.

Sustainable curriculum development is particularly relevant to engineering education, where graduates are expected not only to demonstrate professional and technical competencies but also to understand the broader implications of technological applications for society, the environment, and sustainable development.

The discussions provided FT UNNES with opportunities to gain international perspectives on curriculum design and educational development. The exchange of ideas may also serve as valuable input for future curriculum evaluation and improvement across its study programs.

The event supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by encouraging higher education practices that incorporate sustainable development principles. It also reflects SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through cross-border academic cooperation, knowledge exchange, and institutional collaboration between FT UNNES and UMPSA Malaysia.
