Fakultas Ilmu Sosial dan Ilmu Politik (FISIP) Universitas Negeri Semarang bersama Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) memperkuat kerja sama internasional dengan menelusuri pengetahuan masyarakat Kota Semarang mengenai tumbuhan obat. Kegiatan bertajuk “Studi Etnobotani Tumbuhan Obat untuk Pengobatan Penderita Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) Masyarakat Perkotaan di Semarang” ini menghubungkan pengetahuan lokal masyarakat dengan upaya menjaga pemanfaatan sumber daya tumbuhan secara berkelanjutan.

Kegiatan melibatkan Fadly Husain, Arif Purnomo, dan Eka Yuniati dari bidang Sosiologi dan Antropologi FISIP UNNES, bersama Zurinah Binti Tahir dari Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Kolaborasi ini juga membuka ruang bagi mahasiswa untuk terlibat langsung dalam interaksi dengan masyarakat sekaligus mengenali hubungan antara tumbuhan, budaya, dan praktik kesehatan keluarga.

Sepanjang April hingga Mei 2025, tim menyambangi warga di 15 kelurahan yang tersebar di Kecamatan Mijen, Gunungpati, dan Gajahmungkur. Mereka bertemu dengan ibu rumah tangga, petani, penjual jamu, kader kesehatan, pengurus lingkungan, hingga warga yang masih menyimpan pengetahuan mengenai berbagai tanaman yang tumbuh di sekitar tempat tinggal mereka.

Jangkauan kegiatan tersebut melintasi karakter wilayah yang cukup beragam, dari kawasan yang masih memiliki pekarangan dan lahan hijau hingga lingkungan perkotaan yang lebih padat. Tiga kecamatan itu secara administratif mencakup sekitar 124,13 kilometer persegi atau 12.413 hektare, berdasarkan data BPS Kota Semarang.

Di tengah perubahan wajah perkotaan, berbagai tumbuhan obat ternyata masih menjadi bagian dari kehidupan masyarakat. Jahe, kunyit, temulawak, serai, kelor, lidah buaya, pandan, bunga telang, hingga sirih masih ditemukan dan dikenal manfaatnya oleh warga. Pengetahuan mengenai bagian tanaman yang digunakan, cara mengolah, hingga kebiasaan mengonsumsinya terus bertahan dalam praktik sehari-hari.

Interaksi dengan warga menjadi penting karena pengetahuan tumbuhan tidak hanya berbicara tentang khasiat, tetapi juga tentang hubungan masyarakat dengan lingkungan sekitarnya. Di sejumlah tempat, tanaman obat masih tumbuh di pekarangan rumah atau ruang hijau lingkungan dan dimanfaatkan berdasarkan pengetahuan yang diwariskan dalam keluarga maupun komunitas.

Perubahan penggunaan lahan dan meningkatnya kebutuhan terhadap produk herbal juga membawa tantangan tersendiri. Pemanfaatan tumbuhan secara berlebihan tanpa diikuti pengelolaan dan budidaya berkelanjutan dapat mengurangi ketersediaannya. Karena itu, pengenalan jenis tanaman serta pengetahuan masyarakat mengenai pemanfaatannya menjadi salah satu pijakan untuk mendorong pengelolaan sumber daya tumbuhan secara lebih bijaksana.

Kerja sama dengan UKM memperluas perspektif kegiatan tersebut. Zurinah Binti Tahir berkontribusi dalam pengembangan pendekatan antropologis, sementara kolaborasi kedua perguruan tinggi memperkuat pertukaran pengetahuan mengenai etnobotani, kesehatan masyarakat, dan keberlanjutan lingkungan.

Bagi FISIP UNNES, kegiatan ini juga menjadi cara untuk menjaga agar pengetahuan lokal mengenai tumbuhan obat tidak terputus di tengah perubahan kehidupan perkotaan. Pendokumentasian jenis tumbuhan dan praktik masyarakat dapat mendukung upaya konservasi, sekaligus memperkuat pemanfaatan sumber daya hayati yang tetap memperhatikan keberlanjutan.
