Koordinator Program Studi S2 Kajian Sejarah, Mukhamad Shokheh, Ph.D, menjadi pembicara dalam kegiatan International Guest Lecturer in Virtual Lecture Series yang diselenggarakan oleh West Visayas State University, Filipina. Kegiatan ini diikuti mahasiswa kelas Master of Arts in Education Mayor in Social Studies dengan topik Research Methods Applied in History.

Perkuliahan secara daring itu berlangsung selama tiga jam, dimulai pukul 09.30 hingga 12.30 WIB. Shokheh menegaskan bahwa sejarah tidak dapat dipahami hanya sebagai kumpulan fakta masa lalu.

Menurut dia, sejarah merupakan hasil interpretasi ilmiah terhadap berbagai bukti peninggalan manusia yang dianalisis dalam konteks ruang dan waktu.“Sejarah adalah rekonstruksi peristiwa masa lalu yang bermakna, sehingga membutuhkan metode yang sistematis agar hasilnya kredibel,” ujar Shokheh dalam pemaparannya, Sabtu, 18 April 2026.

Ia kemudian menjelaskan empat tahapan utama dalam metode penelitian sejarah. Tahapan pertama adalah heuristik, yakni proses pengumpulan sumber sejarah. Kedua, kritik sumber yang meliputi verifikasi eksternal dan internal untuk menguji keaslian serta kredibilitas sumber. Ketiga, interpretasi, yaitu tahap analisis dan sintesis untuk memahami makna peristiwa. Terakhir, historiografi sebagai proses penulisan sejarah secara ilmiah.

Menurut Shokheh, keempat tahapan tersebut harus dilalui secara sistematis sebagai satu kesatuan siklus logis. Hal itu penting untuk menghasilkan karya sejarah yang tidak hanya informatif, tetapi juga dapat dipertanggungjawabkan secara akademik.

Dalam kesempatan itu, ia juga mendemonstrasikan penerapan metode sejarah melalui studi kasus perjuangan rakyat Filipina melawan kolonialisme Spanyol pada abad ke-19. Melalui contoh tersebut, mahasiswa diajak memahami bagaimana proses penelusuran arsip dilakukan.

Mahasiswa juga mengetahui cara membedakan fakta dari bias sumber, hingga teknik menyusun narasi sejarah yang kuat. “Metode sejarah bukan sekadar konsep teoritis, tetapi memiliki sifat operasional yang dapat diterapkan langsung dalam penelitian,” kata dia.

Kegiatan ini ditutup dengan penekanan pentingnya penguasaan metode sejarah bagi pendidik Ilmu Pengetahuan Sosial (IPS). Menurut Shokheh, kemampuan tersebut menjadi kunci dalam menumbuhkan kesadaran historis yang kritis di kalangan generasi muda.

Sebagai bagian dari upaya global, kegiatan ini juga sejalan dengan Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan atau Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), khususnya tujuan keempat tentang pendidikan berkualitas. Melalui penguatan kapasitas akademik dan kolaborasi internasional seperti ini, institusi pendidikan berkontribusi dalam meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran, memperluas wawasan global mahasiswa, serta mendorong lahirnya generasi yang kritis, reflektif, dan berdaya saing di tingkat internasional.
