Education empowers Universitas Negeri Semarang in creating the next generation of leaders

Fact and History

Previously named IKIP Semarang, Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) has a long history in Education. The following is the development of UNNES from year to year.

1960-1963

Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) and Sports College (STO)

In 1960, Kursus B-I and Kursus B-II were integrated into Diponegoro University to form a Faculty of Education. In 1963, the Department of Physical Education, which was previously part of Kursus B-II, was separated and became the School of Sports Sciences (STO) which stood on its own under the Department of Sports.

1963-1965

Institute of Teacher Training and Education (IKIP) Yogyakarta Semarang branch

In 1963, a Presidential Decree was issued for the establishment of the Institute of Teacher Training and Education (IKIP) as an institution for educating educational personnel. At that time, there were only four IKIPs in Jakarta, Bandung, Malang, and Yogyakarta. The FKIP of Diponegoro University, which was considered not yet capable of standing alone, was designated as the Semarang branch of IKIP Yogyakarta.

1965-1999

IKIP Semarang

IKIP Yogyakarta branch in Semarang grew rapidly. In order to direct its development more effectively in the future, while waiting for the Presidential Decree, the Minister of PTIP issued Ministerial Decree No. 40 of 1965 dated March 8, 1965, which established IKIP Yogyakarta branch in Semarang as IKIP Semarang consisting of the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Language and Arts Education, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Exact Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering Education. In 1977, the teacher education program in sports returned to its parent institution in a new entity called the Faculty of Sports Science Education (FKIK).

1999-now

Universitas Negeri Semarang

With the issuance of Presidential Decree Number 124 of 1999 regarding the transformation of IKIP Semarang, Bandung, and Medan into universities, IKIP Semarang was then renamed Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES). In 2000, the names of the faculties within UNNES were changed to: Faculty of Education, Faculty of Language and Arts, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Sports Science, and Graduate Program. In 2006, the Faculty of Economics was established, and a year later, the Faculty of Law was formed at UNNES. The establishment of these two new faculties was a consequence of becoming a university.
