Semarang State University (UNNES) keeps striving on its purpose to become a world class conservation university. Rector of Universitas Negeri Semarang, Prof. Dr. Fathur Rokhman, M.Hum., signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a research institution based in Hiroshima Japan, Waku Pro Science Project Hiroshima, represented by its chairman, Profesor Hayashi Takehiro, Tuesday (30/8) in Kampus UNNES Sekaran Gunungpati Semarang.
The collaboration covers a number of programs including exchange of researchers, joint research, international publication, exchange of information, and exchange of research materials.
Waku Pro Science Project is a research center under a consortium of a number of universities in Hiroshima Perfecture, such as Hiroshima University, Hijiyama University, and Hiroshima Perfecture University which was established in 2003. The funding for the institution mainly comes from Mazda Corporation, an excellent automobile company in Japan.
In Japan, Waku Pro Science Project has been actively working on research-based community service. One of its featured programs which has been running for decades in Hiroshima University is “Professor Goes to School” in which the university, Mazda Corporation and the government of Hiroshima collaborate in facilitating professors in science to teach in the schools with special needs according to the data from the Education Agency of Hiroshima.
Professor Hayashi Takehiro stated that, he usually teach in at least 10 elementary and middle schools around Hiroshima in one academic year in which the teachers get involved in the process of teaching and learning which often followed by discussion on enhancing the quality of learning process and result (in-service-teacher-training). In 2015, the learning topic was the education of landslide mitigation which was integrated with science subject in elementary and middle schools. It was conducted in response to the landslide which hit Hiroshima in 2014 and caused no less than 70 casualties.
Rector of UNNES confirmed that the very first implementation of the MoU would be the “Overseas Academic Lecture” which would present Professor Hayashi Takehiro in a guest lecture before more than 150 students in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences on Tuesday (30/8). It will be followed by inviting Waku Pro researchers from Japan as guest lecturers in UNNES for one year in 2017.
