Dr. rer. nat. Adi Nur Cahyono, M.Pd., a lecturer at Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), has been appointed as a guest professor at the Institut für Didaktik der Mathematik und Informatik, Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany. The program is fully funded by the German government through the International Guest Lectureship scheme.
As part of this program, Dr. Adi Nur Cahyono teaches a 3-credit course titled “AI and Coding in Mathematical Modelling Instruction” during the Winter Semester 2025/2026.
The course is delivered in a block format consisting of 16 sessions over a three-week period and is designed to combine theoretical and practical components.
The course explores the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), coding, and mathematical modelling in education. Topics include the foundations of mathematical modelling in STEM education, fundamental concepts of AI and computational thinking, programming for mathematical modelling, and the design of AI- and coding-enhanced mathematical modelling instruction.
In addition to teaching, Dr. Adi Nur Cahyono is conducting collaborative research with Prof. Dr. Matthias Ludwig and his research team as part of efforts to strengthen academic collaboration between UNNES and Goethe University Frankfurt.
Goethe University Frankfurt is also home to the MathCityMap headquarters, a project in which Dr. Adi Nur Cahyono has been involved since 2013. His engagement with the project culminated in his doctoral dissertation on MathCityMap Indonesia in 2017.
This experience later became an important foundation for the development of STEM Trails in Indonesia. The STEM Trails Project has been underway since 2022 with phased funding support from the Math Trails Lab UNNES, DRTPM Dikti of the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, the Indonesian Collaborative Research Grant among PTNBH universities, and continues in 2026 with additional grant support from Australia.
The visit also serves as an opportunity to further strengthen collaboration with Frankfurt in the development of STEM Trails and to prepare for future joint projects.
As a follow-up to this collaboration, a reciprocal visit is planned in which two professors from Germany will undertake a two-month sabbatical at UNNES. This partnership highlights the importance of academic diplomacy, the strengthening of knowledge-based international collaboration, and its contribution to enhancing the global reputation of the university.
