Dear UNNES friends, for those of you who love numbers and logic, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) is a paradise. However, a classic dilemma often arises among prospective students: “Should I take Mathematics (Pure) or Mathematics Education?”
At first glance, they may seem similar, but they are like taking different paths toward different destinations. Choosing a major that doesn’t align with your career passion could lead to a misstep in your future strategy.
To help you make an informed decision, let’s break down the fundamental differences between these two flagship programs at FMIPA UNNES.
1. Main Focus: The Scientist vs. The Educator
The most striking difference lies in the ultimate goal.
- Mathematics (Pure): Focuses on deepening the knowledge of mathematics itself. You will be trained to become a “scientist” or analyst who dissects theories, proves theorems, and even develops mathematical models for industry. The questions are “Why does this formula exist?” and “How can it be applied to solve industrial problems?”.
- Mathematics Education: Focuses on how to transfer this knowledge to others. You will not only learn mathematics, but also student psychology, teaching methods, and classroom management. The questions are “How can this formula be taught so that students can easily understand it?”.
2. Course Material (Curriculum)
- In Pure Mathematics: You will encounter very deep and abstract courses, such as Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Topology, to Actuarial and Computational Mathematics. There is almost no pedagogical portion (the science of teaching).
- In Mathematics Education: You will still learn school mathematics material up to an advanced level (Calculus, Geometry, Statistics), but with the addition of a large number of credits in education. You will learn Microteaching (teaching practice), Curriculum Design, Learning Evaluation, and Student Development Psychology.
3. Degree
Pure Mathematics graduates receive a Bachelor of Science (S.Si.) or Bachelor of Mathematics (S.Mat.) degree (depending on university policy/year). Mathematics Education graduates receive a Bachelor of Education (S.Pd.) degree.
4. Career Prospects: Not Just Becoming a Teacher
This is the deciding factor.
- Pure Mathematics Prospects: Very broad in the corporate sector. You can become a Data Scientist, Data Analyst, Actuary (in an insurance company), Programmer, or even a Researcher at a research institute. The logical and data analysis skills of pure mathematics graduates are highly sought after by the banking and technology industries.
- Mathematics Education Prospects: The main path is to become a teacher (civil servant/PPPK/private), tutoring instructor, education consultant, or EdTech (Education Technology) startup developer. This path is very stable and always in demand.
Which is More Suitable for You?
- Choose Mathematics Education if: You enjoy interacting with people, have a social spirit to educate others, and like school mathematics.
- Choose Pure Mathematics if: You prefer working behind the scenes with data, enjoy abstract logic challenges, and are aiming for a career in a multinational company or actuarial science.
Achieve Your Future at FMIPA UNNES
