To enhance expertise in science education, fabrication technology, and research collaboration between Indonesian and Korean institutions, two faculty members from Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) participated in the Short-Term Training Program held in Korea from February 3–7, 2025. Organized by Sogang University under the LUPIC (Leading University Project for International Cooperation) initiative, this program has been running since 2023 and is scheduled to continue until 2029.
The Indonesian delegation invited to this program included Prof. Woro Sumarni and Prof. Cepi Kurniawan from UNNES, alongside Prof. Asep Kadarohman, Prof. Triannisa Rahmawati, and Prof. Fitri Khoerunnisa from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), with representatives from UNDIKSHA participating virtually.
The program commenced with the LUPIC Bi-annual Meeting, where representatives from UPI, UNNES, and UNDIKSHA presented progress reports, achievements, and strategic plans for the future. Discussions centered on evaluating the outcomes of the second-year projects, identifying challenges, and formulating a strategic roadmap for the third year of collaboration.
Beyond academic activities, the delegation visited the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Korea, where they met with Education Attaché Mrs. Amaliah to discuss academic and research collaborations between Indonesian and Korean institutions under the LUPIC project.
The Indonesian delegation also held meetings with the leadership of Sogang University, including President Prof. Luke Jong-hyeok Shim and Executive Vice President Prof. Tai-kyung Song, to explore opportunities for institutional partnerships and research cooperation. Discussions focused on expanding academic exchange programs, joint research initiatives, and the development of collaborative projects in science and technology.
The program continued with a seminar at Seoul National University (SNU), covering topics such as science education reform, the integration of artificial intelligence in teaching methodologies, and the development of digital competencies for future educators. The seminar was also broadcast live on YouTube and attended virtually by 28 UNNES students.
On the second day, the Indonesian delegation visited Seoul National University of Science and Technology (SNUST) for a session on Introduction to Technopark (Semiconductor Fabrication Lab), led by Prof. Hyun Woo Cho and Prof. Seul Ki Hong. The session covered advanced semiconductor fabrication technologies, microfabrication techniques, and cutting-edge semiconductor manufacturing processes. The delegation also toured the 3D Printing Laboratory at SeoulTech, where they observed prototype production demonstrations using high-precision 3D printing machines.
The program’s highlight was a hands-on session at LAB311, Sogang University, where participants gained practical experience in digital manufacturing, prototyping, and technological innovation. This session emphasized the application of Arduino-based products in scientific research, including environmental monitoring, chemical sensors, and laboratory automation. The delegation was also introduced to CNC laser cutting machines and other technologies supporting research and innovation.
On the final day, the Indonesian delegation visited Hanyang University, where Prof. Jin Seok Lee led a discussion on the biocompatibility and anti-aging properties of Indonesian essential oils. This session explored the potential of Indonesia’s natural essential oils for applications in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and biomedical industries. Essential oil samples from Indonesia, brought by Prof. Asep Kadarohman (UPI), were analyzed using advanced research techniques to assess their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties.
The Short-Term Training Program in Korea serves as a platform for strengthening academic and research collaborations between UPI, UNNES, UNDIKSHA, and Korean institutions. It provides valuable insights into advancements in science education, fabrication technology applications, and cross-cultural academic exchanges.
In the future, the outcomes of this program will serve as the foundation for joint research projects, student and faculty exchanges, and curriculum development initiatives. This collaboration is expected to drive innovation, scientific advancements, and educational excellence through strong international partnerships.
