UNNES Strengthens Food Security through the Provision of Nutritious, Affordable, and Sustainable Food to Support SDG 2

Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) reinforces its commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2: Zero Hunger by providing healthy, nutritious, and affordable food for students and university staff across its campus. This commitment is implemented through a network of campus canteens offering a variety of meals at affordable prices, ranging from IDR 8,000 to IDR 15,000 per serving.

Menu options include soto (Indonesian soup), nasi pecel (rice served with vegetables and peanut sauce), gado-gado (vegetable salad with peanut sauce), assorted vegetables, and tofu- and tempeh-based dishes as sources of protein. The availability of these meals helps ensure that members of the university community can access diverse and nutritious food without placing an excessive burden on their budgets.

These efforts are reinforced by Circular Letter No. B/28400/UN37/RT.02/2024 on Healthy Canteens, which requires all campus canteens to provide healthy, nutritious, and balanced meals, including vegetarian options; use high-quality fresh ingredients; apply hygienic food preparation practices; and maintain cleanliness and sanitation. The policy also encourages the use of environmentally friendly packaging and halal certification. Periodic inspections conducted by the Food Health and Safety Team under the Student Affairs Office help ensure compliance with food safety, hygiene, and sustainability standards.

In addition, Circular Letter No. B/28393/UN37/RT.02/2024 on Clean Kitchens supports the availability of clean kitchen facilities for lecturers, university staff, and students. This policy strengthens the campus environment by facilitating healthier food preparation, handling, and consumption practices.

UNNES also contributes to SDG 2 through an integrated food waste management system. Organic waste from campus canteens is collected daily and processed into compost at the university’s Integrated Waste Processing Facility (Tempat Pengolahan Sampah Terpadu, or TPST). The resulting compost is subsequently used to enrich the soil at the university’s environmentally friendly farm (Ecofarm). This practice connects food provision, waste reduction, and resource recovery, contributing to a more sustainable food system.

Through its healthy canteen policy, affordable meal options, food safety monitoring, and the reuse of organic waste in agricultural activities, UNNES is developing a healthier and more sustainable campus food ecosystem. These initiatives contribute particularly to SDG Target 2.1 by supporting access to safe and nutritious food. The documented policies and practices demonstrate UNNES’s institutional contribution to the food security agenda while establishing a foundation for more measurable impact assessments using data on beneficiaries, food affordability, and organic waste processing outcomes.
