UNNES Requires External Parties to Follow Single-Use Plastic Reduction Policy on Campus

Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) extends its commitment to environmental sustainability to external parties that use its facilities or conduct activities within the university environment. Through Rector’s Circular Letter No. B/28525/UN37/PA.00.00/2024 concerning the Reduction of Single-Use Plastics within UNNES, the university establishes guidelines to minimize disposable plastic use across campus activities, including those involving external partners, vendors, and service providers.

The circular letter supports UNNES’s broader commitment to maintaining a sustainable campus environment. It calls on university work units, canteens, and vendors to reduce the use of single-use plastic products, including plastic bags, bottles, and food packaging. These requirements encourage the use of reusable or environmentally friendly alternatives and promote responsible waste management throughout campus operations.

The policy is particularly relevant when university facilities are used by external parties, such as event organizers, catering providers, and other service partners. Activities conducted on campus are expected to support the university’s plastic reduction objectives by limiting disposable materials and adopting more sustainable practices. This helps ensure that environmental standards remain part of campus activities, regardless of whether they are organized by internal units or external parties.
UNNES also reinforces its sustainability commitments through Rector’s Regulation No. 125 of 2024 concerning the Prohibition of Single-Use Plastics and Rector’s Regulation No. 79 of 2024 concerning the Guidelines for the Procurement of Goods and Services. Together, these policies provide a broader framework for reducing plastic waste and encouraging environmentally responsible practices in procurement and campus operations.

Implementation requires coordination between the university’s work units and the external parties involved in campus activities. Depending on the activity and applicable agreement, requirements may include reducing disposable packaging, providing reusable alternatives, sorting waste properly, and maintaining cleanliness after the use of university facilities.
Through these policies, UNNES demonstrates that its commitment to environmental sustainability extends beyond its internal operations. By incorporating plastic reduction into the management of campus facilities and activities involving external parties, the university promotes shared environmental responsibility and strengthens its identity as a Conservation University.
