Prof. Dr. Margareta Rahayuningsih is actively engaged in research and community service related to biodiversity and environmental conservation. Over the past 15 years, she has conducted extensive biodiversity research in the Mount Ungaran forest and its buffer zones. She considers Mount Ungaran a critical natural forest in Central Java, essential for both biodiversity conservation and watershed protection. Recognizing the environmental significance of this area, she and her team at UNNES developed a proposal for the Special Purpose Forest Area (KHDTK) designation. After undergoing evaluation by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, on August 30, 2024, UNNES was officially granted KHDTK status for education and training covering 68.42 hectares, as per Ministerial Decree No. 1134 of 2024.
Her expertise has also contributed to various conservation initiatives, including: Serving as an expert consultant for the Long-Term Management Plan (RPJP) of Nature Reserves in Central Java ;Member of the Central Java Genetic Resources Team ; Judge for the “Sobat Bumi” Eco-School Competition (Pertamina Foundation) ; Evaluator for the Adiwiyata Green School Program; Validator for the National Special Research on Disease Vectors and Reservoirs (Rikhus Vektora) ; Expert consultant on gecko and long-tailed macaque population surveys in Central Java (BRIN-BKSDA collaboration) ; Advisor for the feasibility assessment of Tinjomoyo Forest as a Botanical Garden (Semarang City Environmental Agency) ; Biodiversity and water resource expert (Semarang City Development Planning Agency – Bappeda); Expert consultant for the Central Java Task Force on Human-Wildlife Conflict Mitigation ; Contributor to the National Quota Allocation for Wild Plant and Animal Harvesting
