SEMARANG REGENCY – A team of lecturers from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), held a training program on the production and utilization of ecoenzyme for the community of Jetak Village, Getasan District, Semarang Regency, on Saturday, July 18, 2026. The community service activity was enthusiastically attended by 30 women participants.
The program, funded by the Institute for Research and Community Service of Universitas Negeri Semarang (LPPM UNNES), was aimed at improving community knowledge and skills in managing household organic waste. Fruit and vegetable scraps, which are commonly discarded, were introduced as materials that can be processed into ecoenzyme.
The community service activity was led by Hendra Febriyanto, M.Pd., a lecturer from the Undergraduate Program in Science Education at FMIPA UNNES. The training combined material presentation, discussion, and hands-on practice so that participants could not only understand the concept of waste processing, but also apply it independently at home.
The first material was delivered by Fidia Fibriana, Ph.D. She explained the stages of making ecoenzyme, the required materials, the processing steps, and its possible uses in daily life. Participants also gained an understanding of the importance of sorting household waste from its source.
Processing organic waste into ecoenzyme is considered a simple step to reduce the amount of waste being disposed of. This habit can also encourage a more responsible lifestyle toward the environment, starting from the family level.
The next material was delivered by Hendra Febriyanto, M.Pd., who discussed social media marketing. This topic was provided to equip participants with basic knowledge of using social media as a tool to introduce and market products.
Knowledge of digital marketing is important if the community is later able to produce ecoenzyme consistently and develop it into a product with economic value. Social media can be used to educate potential consumers, showcase product benefits, build business identity, and expand marketing reach.
After attending the material presentation, participants were divided into groups to practice making ecoenzyme. The community service team provided the necessary tools and materials so that each participant could directly follow the production steps.
During the practice session, participants learned how to prepare household organic materials, mix ingredients according to the proper measurements, use appropriate containers, and understand the storage and fermentation process. The community service team provided direct assistance to ensure that each step was carried out properly.
The training atmosphere was lively and interactive. Participants actively asked questions, engaged in discussions, and directly tried the process of making ecoenzyme. Their enthusiasm showed the community’s concern for household waste issues and its alternative utilization.
This activity was not only intended to teach participants how to make environmentally friendly products, but also to encourage a shift in the community’s perspective on waste. Fruit and vegetable scraps that were once considered useless can be managed into products with practical benefits.
If developed sustainably, ecoenzyme production also has the potential to become a productive activity for the people of Jetak Village. The resulting product can be used for household needs. In the next stage, the community can develop packaging and marketing strategies, creating opportunities for additional family income.
This community service program is strongly connected to several goals within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Its main relevance lies in SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), particularly in efforts to reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, reuse, and organic waste processing.
The training also supports SDG 13 (Climate Action). Household-level organic waste management can become part of efforts to build environmentally conscious habits and reduce uncontrolled waste disposal.
The aspect of skills improvement and business development opportunities is related to SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). Training on ecoenzyme production and social media marketing opens opportunities for the community to develop productive economic activities based on household potential.
In addition, the education and training provided to the community also support SDG 4 (Quality Education), particularly in providing lifelong learning opportunities and improving practical skills within the community.
The series of activities concluded with a joint action of applying ecoenzyme solution to plants. This activity served as a symbol of the participants’ commitment to managing organic waste and protecting the environment starting from the household level.
Through this activity, the FMIPA UNNES lecturer team hopes that the knowledge gained by participants will not stop at the training session. Participants are expected to practice making ecoenzyme independently, share their knowledge with other residents, and develop it into an environmental movement and sustainable economic activity in Jetak Village.
