Students of Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) participating in the GIAT 16 Health Community Service Program conducted an educational activity on organic waste management through an eco-enzyme demonstration at Sumberjatipohon Village Hall, Grobogan District, Grobogan Regency, on Monday, June 30, 2026. The program aimed to increase public awareness of transforming household organic waste into environmentally friendly products with practical daily applications.
The initiative was designed in response to ongoing waste management challenges within the community. Practices such as burning waste and disposing of it into rivers are still found in some areas, posing environmental risks. Through this activity, residents were introduced to a more sustainable and beneficial approach to handling organic waste.
Attended by 36 participants, the program began with educational sessions on different types of waste, their environmental impacts, and the importance of waste management at the household level. Participants were then introduced to eco-enzyme production, including its ingredients, benefits, and preparation process.
The GIAT 16 Health team, under the supervision of Field Supervisor Dr. Chita Maharani, S.T., M.Kes., demonstrated how to produce eco-enzyme using organic kitchen waste such as fruit peels and vegetables fermented with brown sugar and water. Participants also received practical tips to successfully carry out the fermentation process independently at home.
One resident of Krajan 1 Hamlet, Santi, explained that waste management remains a challenge in the community. “Some residents still burn waste, while many others dispose of it into rivers. Activities like this help us understand better ways of managing waste,” she said.
Rumining, Chair of the Sumberjatipohon Village Family Welfare Movement (TP-PKK), expressed appreciation for the program. “This eco-enzyme demonstration is extremely useful for housewives. The materials were easy to understand and can be directly practiced at home,” she stated.
Through this initiative, UNNES students not only introduced a simple organic waste management solution but also encouraged behavioral changes toward more environmentally responsible lifestyles. The activity is expected to foster sustainable waste management practices and reduce environmental pollution in rural communities.
This activity supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
