Immersion Study Batch 2: UNNES Psychology IUP Student Expands Global Insight in Malaysia

The Psychology Study Program at Universitas Negeri Semarang once again conducted its Immersion Study program for students of the International Undergraduate Program (IUP). One of the participants, Firda Salya Mutiara, a sixth-semester IUP Psychology student, joined the Immersion Study at the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Johor Bahru. Her placement took place from 1-28 July 2025.

The Immersion Study is one of the flagship initiatives of the UNNES Psychology Study Program and will become a mandatory activity for all IUP students. The program aims to provide direct international learning exposure and strengthen students’ understanding of cross-cultural psychology in professional settings. Throughout the program, Salya was supervised by Ms. Atika, Social and Cultural Affairs Staff at KJRI Johor Bahru, who provided guidance and direction related to daily tasks and responsibilities.

During the program, Salya engaged in various activities, including observation, assistance, and intervention in consular services at KJRI Johor Bahru. She supported the handling of citizenship documentation, labor-related services, migrant worker complaints, and other consular functions. In addition, she participated in social and cultural activities, such as a collaborative event between KJRI and Mandiri International Remittance, assistance for shelter residents at KJRI Johor Bahru, and field observations on the social conditions of Indonesians living in Malaysia.

“The experience was both highly positive and challenging. I gained valuable insight into the complexity of diplomatic work and the crucial role of KJRI in serving Indonesian migrant workers. The professional yet welcoming environment enabled me to learn and contribute meaningfully. My interactions with Indonesians in Malaysia offered new perspectives on the challenges and opportunities they encounter. Overall, the immersion program at KJRI Johor was inspiring and broadened my understanding of international relations and public service,” Salya shared when asked about her experience.

Salya further explained that her motivation for joining the program was to apply psychological knowledge in a cross-national context, particularly in issues related to the protection of Indonesian citizens abroad. Through this opportunity, she expanded her global perspective, strengthened her social sensitivity, built broader professional networks, and contributed to humanitarian-oriented work.

One of her most memorable experiences was participating in an official visit to the Immigration Depot in Machap Umboo, Melaka, as well as meeting Indonesian migrant workers at Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital, Batu Pahat. These encounters provided her with a deeper understanding of the human dimension of consular work. The KJRI team demonstrated empathy and professionalism in handling sensitive situations, illustrating that consular responsibilities extend beyond administrative duties to include the protection and support of Indonesian citizens facing hardship abroad.

“I hope this experience strengthens my capacity as a psychology student who is aware of and responsive to global issues. To my fellow UNNES IUP Psychology students, I hope this program inspires you and opens more opportunities for international engagement so that we can continue learning, sharing, and contributing in meaningful ways,” Salya concluded.

Salya’s enthusiasm reflects the significance and richness of the Immersion Study program. It is hoped that this program will continue to equip students with valuable international exposure and professional experience, supporting their personal development and preparing them to become globally competitive graduates of UNNES Psychology.
