Program Studi Geografi Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) bersama National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) Taiwan melaksanakan studi lapangan mengenai penggunaan air berkelanjutan di Waduk Jatibarang, Semarang pada 12 Juni 2025. Kegiatan ini diarahkan untuk memperkuat pemahaman mahasiswa mengenai pengelolaan sumber daya air sekaligus peran infrastruktur air dalam menghadapi risiko lingkungan dan bencana yang berkaitan dengan perubahan iklim.

Kegiatan melibatkan 25 mahasiswa dan 6 dosen NTNU Taiwan, bersama mahasiswa dan dosen Geografi UNNES. Peserta mengikuti orientasi lapangan di kawasan waduk dan memperoleh penjelasan dari pihak Balai Besar Wilayah Sungai (BBWS) mengenai pengelolaan dan fungsi Bendungan Jatibarang. Universitas Negeri Semarang

Salah satu perhatian utama dalam studi lapangan tersebut adalah fungsi Bendungan Jatibarang dalam pengendalian banjir Kota Semarang. Dengan kapasitas tampungan mencapai 20,4 juta meter kubik, waduk memiliki fungsi strategis sebagai pengendali banjir, penyedia air baku, sekaligus sumber energi. Berita resmi UNNES menyebut keberadaan bendungan mampu mengurangi risiko banjir Kota Semarang hingga sekitar sepertiga. Universitas Negeri Semarang

Dari sisi kawasan, data teknis Balai Besar Wilayah Sungai Pemali Juana mencatat luas genangan Bendungan Jatibarang mencapai 189 hektare atau sekitar 1.890.000 m², dengan daerah tangkapan air sekitar 54 km². Bendungan juga memiliki kapasitas tampungan total 20,4 juta meter kubik. 

Melalui pembelajaran langsung tersebut, mahasiswa memperoleh pemahaman bahwa pengelolaan air tidak hanya berkaitan dengan penyediaan air bersih, tetapi juga menjadi bagian penting dari upaya meningkatkan ketahanan wilayah terhadap banjir dan perubahan pola hidrologi. Pengelolaan waduk, daerah tangkapan air, dan aliran sungai menjadi komponen penting dalam mengurangi risiko bencana serta menjaga ketersediaan sumber daya air.

Kegiatan juga mempertemukan mahasiswa dan akademisi dari Indonesia dan Taiwan dalam pembelajaran mengenai konservasi air dan pengelolaan risiko bencana. Kolaborasi internasional tersebut memberikan ruang pertukaran pengetahuan mengenai tantangan lingkungan yang dihadapi wilayah perkotaan serta berbagai pendekatan dalam pengelolaan sumber daya air secara berkelanjutan.
