As an effort to contribute ideas and concepts related to resilience and empowerment of rural communities especially in the Asian region, the Faculty of Social Sciences (FIS) Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) held an International Seminar on the 2nd International Conference on Rural Studies in Asia (ICoRSiA) 2018, Wednesday-Thursday (10-11 / 10).
The activity with the theme “Recognizing Resilience in Rural Asia” was opened by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs UNNES Prof. Dr. Rustono MHum. He said that even though the development had been carried out in the village, but could not answer the existing problems. Essentially development is an effort to develop communities in various Asian countries.
The seminar held at the Graha Santika Hotel Semarang invited various practitioners from within and outside the country. They are Jonathan Rigg from National University Singapore, A Rahman Tony bin Abdullah from the University Malaysia Sabah, Hans Antlov from RTI International Knowledge Sector Initiative and Dewi Liesnoor Setyowati from UNNES.
Jonathan Riggs as the first speaker highlighted the low resilience of small farmers in Asia. Hans Antlov as the second speaker discussed about rural resilience and knowledge in Indonesia. He highlighted local assets such as knowledge, local commodities and human resources as the key to rural development. While Dewi Liesnoor Setyowati compared the handling of floods in Thailand and Indonesia.
A total of 156 articles from participants from Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia and India participated in Thomson Reuters indexed 2018 ICoRSiA. The results of this discussion are expected to be a recommendation to determine the direction of village development policy in Asia.
