On Friday, June 13, 2025, fourth-semester English Literature Study Program students of UNNES’s Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS) showcased their “The Roaring Twenties” theater performance. This impressive production, a final project for their Theatre course, was held in Building B6 FBS UNNES and captivated over 400 attendees.

The performance featured four Pulitzer Prize-winning American plays written in the 1920s: “Miss Lulu Bett” by Zona Gale, “Strange Interlude” by Eugene O’Neill, “Craig’s Wife” by George Kelly, and “Icebound” by Owen Davis. Each script was presented with artistic interpretations that carefully considered the socio-cultural context of the era.

Sefind Xena Pratama G, the Head of the Organizing Committee, expressed his gratitude and pride for the organizing committee and the actors’ hard work in making the performance a success. “The process was truly extraordinary, from preparation to the staging itself. This activity wasn’t just about performing on stage; it was also a platform for English Literature students to express themselves and hone their creativity,” he stated.

The Roaring Twenties” performance was met with great enthusiasm from the audience. One attendee, Alen, expressed his impression of the production. “Every performance had its iconic parts. I particularly liked ‘Miss Lulu Bett’ because it brought up the meaningful theme of women empowerment,” he remarked.

While every audience member had their preferences, the play “Craig’s Wife” garnered significant attention. Many viewers commented that the strong character development, intense emotional expression, and the actors’ ability to recreate the distinctive atmosphere of the 1920s were key factors making this particular performance memorable.

With the success of “The Roaring Twenties” production, the 2023 cohort of English Literature students has demonstrated impressive dedication, creativity, and interpretive skills in bringing classic American drama back to life.
