The English Language Education Master’s Program at the Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and Research Gallery Walk on Friday, June 13, 2025, at B11 FBS UNNES. The program organized the event to facilitate and encourage students to complete their theses.
The event started with the Research Gallery Walk, where lecturers provided input on student research proposals. Following this, parallel sessions were conducted, concluding with an FGD session featuring a panel of lecturers.
A Research Gallery Walk is a presentation and discussion method for research findings, set up like an exhibition. In this activity, students display their research outcomes using posters, infographics, or other visual media, which are then showcased in a room much like an art gallery. Other participants walk from one “gallery” to another to view, read, and discuss directly with the researchers.
This event drew in Master of English Language Education students actively working on completing their theses. Among them was Dian Sari Marchia. “I feel even more motivated to finish my thesis faster because I gained so many new insights and perspectives from the lecturers,” she shared.
One exciting research project was presented by Sabiq Ariqun Nabih, titled “Bridging the Belief-Practice Gap: Indonesian EFL Teacher’s Self-Efficacy and Preparedness in Teaching Multimodal Literacy.” This study explores efforts to bridge the gap between teachers’ beliefs and their actual classroom practices in teaching multimodal literacy. Despite facing some challenges in finding samples, the research was completed within two months.
Dr. Novia Trisanti, one of the panelists, stated that the study program strongly supports accelerating students’ studies through academic forums like this. “With FGDs, students can exchange ideas, broaden their perspectives, and find a clearer direction for their research,” said the English Language Education Study Program lecturer at FBS UNNES.
Prof. Dr. Tommi Yuniawan, M.Hum., Dean of FBS UNNES, emphasized that this activity not only speeds up the thesis writing process for students but also contributes to improving the quality and accreditation of the study program.
