Hey, future UNNES students! Accounting consistently ranks as one of the most popular study programs in the Social Sciences and Humanities stream every year. With the industry’s constant need for detail-oriented financial experts, graduates from this major are always in high demand.
However, when applying for college, you might face a big dilemma: “Should I go for a Diploma (D3) or head straight for a Bachelor’s (S1) degree?”
While both deal with finance, they have different “DNAs” and career trajectories. To help you make the right call, let’s break down the differences between a D3 and an S1 in Accounting, from the curriculum to job prospects.
1. Curriculum Focus: Technical Practice vs. Strategic Analysis
The most fundamental difference lies in the balance between theory and practice.
- D3 Accounting
This program focuses on job-ready technical skills. The curriculum is often 60 to 70 percent practice and simulation. You will become highly proficient in journaling, bookkeeping, preparing financial statements, and operating accounting software like MYOB or Accurate. D3 students are trained to be reliable “executors.”
- S1 Accounting
This program focuses on mastering theory, analysis, and decision-making. The balance is roughly 60 percent theory and 40 percent practice. Beyond learning how to create financial reports, you’ll be taught how to analyze them for auditing, business strategy, or corporate taxation. S1 students are trained to be analysts and conceptual thinkers.
2. Study Period and Academic Titles
- D3 Accounting
Designed to be completed in 3 years (6 semesters). At the end of your studies, you are required to complete a Final Project (Tugas Akhir). Graduates earn the title A.Md.Ak (Ahli Madya Akuntansi).
- S1 Accounting
Typically takes 4 years (8 semesters) to complete, with a Bachelor’s Thesis (Skripsi) as a graduation requirement. Graduates receive the title S.Ak (Sarjana Akuntansi).
3. Career Prospects and Corporate Positions
- Diploma Graduates
Equipped with strong technical skills, D3 graduates are usually absorbed into the job market very quickly. Common roles include Accounting Staff, Bookkeeper, Financial Administrative Staff, or Bank Teller.
- Bachelor’s Graduates
S1 graduates often have a broader career range and a higher career ceiling. Common positions include Financial Analyst, Internal or External Auditor, Tax Consultant, and Accounting Manager. If you dream of becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), you must complete an S1 degree first before taking Professional Accountant Education (PPAk).
4. Which One is Better for You?
It all comes back to your personal goals and circumstances:
If you want to graduate quickly, start working sooner, and enjoy structured technical work, D3 Accounting is a fantastic and efficient choice.
On the other hand, if you aim for managerial positions, want to become a Public Accountant, and are ready to invest more time in analytical theory, then S1 Accounting is the way to go.
