The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) is one of the faculties at Semarang State University (UNNES). The change in the name of this faculty was in line with the change in the name of UNNES which was formerly known as the Semarang State IKIP which was established in 1965 in the city of Semarang. Chronologically, the development of FMIPA can be described as follows.
Period 1960 – 1964:
Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Diponegoro University (UNDIP) Semarang Branch
January 1, 1961 by Decree of the Secretary General of the Ministry of Education, Teaching and Culture No. 108487/S dated 27 December 1960, Course B-I and Course B-II were integrated into Diponegoro University to become a Faculty of Teaching and Education (FKIP). October 15, 1961 with Government Regulation No. 7 of 1961, FKIP has a Department of Exact Sciences.
At that time, FKIP UNDIP had two branches, namely in Semarang and Surakarta. Based on PTIP Ministerial Decree No. 35 of 1964 dated May 4, 1964, FKIP UNDIP changed its name to IKIP Yogyakarta Semarang branch and FKIP UNDIP Surakarta branch to IKIP Yogyakarta Surakarta branch. This name change is a follow-up to the government’s policy on the issuance of the Joint Decree of the Minister of PTIP and the Minister of PD&K No. 32 of 1964, dated May 4, 1964 concerning the unification of FKIP and IPG in Jakarta, Bandung, Malang and Yogyakarta into the Teaching and Education Institute (IKIP).
Period 1964 – 1999:
Teaching Faculty of Exact Sciences (FKIE) becomes the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science Education (FPMIPA) IKIP Semarang
On November 7, 1964, through PTIP Ministerial Decree No. 154 of 1964, the Semarang Branch of the Yogyakarta Teachers’ Training College established FKIE. IKIP Yogyakarta Semarang Branch has a total of four faculties, namely the Faculty of Education, the Teaching Faculty of Letters and Arts, and the Teaching Faculty of Social Sciences, and the Teaching Faculty of Exact Sciences.
IKIP Yogyakarta Semarang branch is growing rapidly. In order for its development to be more focused in the future, the Minister of PTIP issued a Decree of the Minister of PTIP No. 40 of 1965 dated March 8, 1965 which determined the Semarang Branch of the Yogyakarta IKIP to become the Semarang IKIP. In this period the Semarang Teachers’ Training College consisted of six faculties, namely the Faculty of Education (FIP), the Teaching Faculty of Literature and Arts (FKSS), the Teaching Faculty of Social Sciences (FKIS), the Teaching Faculty of Exact Sciences (FKIE), and the Teaching Faculty of Engineering (FKT) . FKIE itself consists of the Department of Exact Sciences, the Department of Natural Sciences, the Department of Chemistry, and the Department of Life Sciences
Furthermore, the establishment of the Semarang Teachers’ Training College was strengthened by Presidential Decree no. 271 of 1965 dated 14 September 1965.
Based on Presidential Decree No. 52 of 1982, FKIE changed its name to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Education which consisted of the Department of Mathematics Education, the Department of Physics Education, the Department of Chemistry Education, and the Department of Biology Education.
Period 1999 – now:
Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Semarang State University (UNNES)
With the issuance of Presidential Decree No. 124 of 1999 concerning the change of Semarang, Bandung and Medan IKIP to universities, Semarang IKIP changed its name to Semarang State University, abbreviated as UNNES.
Based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 278/O/1999 concerning the organization and work procedures of UNNES and No. 255/O/2000 concerning the UNNES statute, the name FPMIPA changed to FMIPA. Currently FMIPA consists of six departments and 14 study programs as follows.
