In the ever-evolving digital era, the integration of technology and education is a crucial foundation for creating engaging and relevant learning experiences for today’s students. One concrete manifestation of this spirit is EthnoMathBlox, an innovative learning medium based on a 3D multiplayer educational game that brings the nuances of Semarang’s local culture to the Roblox platform. EthnoMathBlox is designed to foster students’ mathematical literacy skills through an interactive, contextual, and fun learning approach. The primary focus of the learning is on Flat-Sided Solids, which often pose difficulties for students in understanding geometric concepts concretely.
Through EthnoMathBlox, students are invited to explore virtual worlds representing Semarang’s cultural heritage, including the Sam Poo Kong Temple, Blenduk Church, and the Marba Building. In each virtual location, they encounter a variety of educational elements, such as cultural fun facts, learning materials, and interactive problems that require teamwork. This approach not only introduces local cultural values but also connects mathematical concepts to the real-world context around them, making the learning process more engaging, meaningful, and contextual.

Research conducted at SMPN 11 Semarang showed positive results: the use of EthnoMathBlox significantly improved students’ mathematical literacy skills. They became more enthusiastic, engaged in discussions, and demonstrated high motivation to understand material previously considered complex. Learning activities became more lively and collaborative. Teachers assessed that this game-based media helped them explain material in a more creative and understandable way for students.
However, implementing EthnoMathBlox in schools still faces several challenges. One of the main obstacles is limited devices—not all students have devices that support Roblox optimally. Furthermore, teachers need special training to develop educational maps and integrate them into the learning process. If these obstacles can be overcome, EthnoMathBlox has the potential to become an effective learning medium that can be implemented in various schools across Indonesia. In addition to improving math skills, this innovation also serves as a means of preserving local culture through a modern approach that is close to students’ digital world. EthnoMathBlox proves that the synergy between education, technology, and culture can produce learning innovations that are not only enjoyable, but also meaningful and sustainable.
