UNNES Environmental Science Students Visit Ecofarm to Learn About Food Security and the Circular Economy

As part of the Food Security and Global Challenges course, Environmental Science students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UNNES, visited Ecofarm UNNES on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. This activity was attended by Environmental Science lecturers, namely Rifa’ Atunnisa, S.Hut., M.Sc., Ph.D., Putri Alifa Kholil, S.T., M.Ling., and Trida Ridho Fariz, M.Sc., and supported by the UNNES Sub-Directorate of Conservation. At Ecofarm, students learned various concepts of sustainable agriculture, such as hydroponics, processing organic waste using maggots for fish feed, composting, conservation of rare plants, and cultivation of fruit and ornamental plants.

This activity not only introduces the concept of urban farming and food security, but also the circular economy and integrated farming. This learning is in line with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) through sustainable food production systems, SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through organic waste management, SDG 13 (Climate Action) with low-emission agricultural practices, SDG 15 (Life on Land) through the conservation of endangered plants, and SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals) with collaboration between stakeholders.

It is hoped that this visit will broaden students’ insights in applying sustainability principles in the areas of environment and food security, while also supporting UNNES’ efforts in realizing a sustainable campus.
