Artificial Intelligence or AI has become part of everyday life in this digital era. AI has even become embedded in various platforms that we commonly use such as social media and search engines. High school students today are also familiar with the use of AI in various ways. However, the use of AI needs to be done wisely so as not to dull students’ creative thinking skills. In line with this, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Semarang State University (FMIPA Unnes) in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) conducted a socialization of the use of AI to students of the Bina Amal Semarang Integrated Islamic High School. This socialization is packaged in the form of an Expert Study entitled Wise Use of AI for Middle School Students.

The event was held on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at SMIT Bina Amal, Gunungpati, Semarang. The speakers presented were Dr. Tri Sri Noor Asih, M.Sc. from FMIPA Unnes and Associate Professor Dr. Norma Alias from UTM. The speakers had an interactive dialogue with junior high and high school students and explored the extent of the students’ knowledge about AI and what they usually do using AI. Furthermore, the speakers explained the benefits of AI in various aspects of life and the challenges faced in using AI. Students also actively asked whether AI had more benefits or more dangers. The speakers emphasized that AI is like a double-edged sword. If used properly, it can speed up work, facilitate data analysis, and assist learning. However, if not controlled, AI can reduce human critical thinking and creativity. In addition, the key to utilizing AI is balance. Students must continue to hone their logic and problem-solving skills independently, not just relying on technology.

The activity ended with an open discussion session, where students shared their experiences using AI for assignments, research, and even entertainment. With this activity, it is hoped that students can use AI positively while still developing their analytical skills and creativity.
