UTILIZATION OF PAPER WASTE FOR ACTIVE LEARNING ON CONSERVATION CAMPUS

Paper waste is one of the environmental problems from the process of campus activities. As a lecturer at the Conservation Campus, we should be able to utilize waste into something useful. In this case, paper waste such as used print-calendar is used to implement an active learning model for students. The model chosen is Jig-saw cooperative learning. Students are divided into original groups, then expert groups are determined according to the topics to be discussed. Members of the original group are then moved to the expert group to discuss for 30 minutes, or more depending on the complexity of the material. After that, representatives from each original group return to convey the results of the discussion from the expert group.

The material discussed is poured into a used calendar and presented in front of the class. Usually, this method uses flipchart paper and post-its, which requires a larger budget than using a used calendar and markers. Students are enthusiastic about this method because everyone is actively involved and does not feel sleepy. The advantage of this model is that students can absorb the same information three times: during discussions in expert groups, in home groups, and during presentations. The results of the work can be snapped and shared with all group members. It is hoped that the application of the Jig-saw model with used calendar media can improve students’ understanding of the material being studied
