Science Teachers in Tegal Regency Trained in Utilizing Household Waste and Local Wisdom for Learning

Two Community Service (PM) teams from Universitas Negeri Semarang (Unnes) held training for junior high school science teachers in Tegal Regency. The first team, led by Dr. Bambang Subali, focused on improving the quality of P5 implementation through the utilization of household waste, aiming to train students and teachers’ entrepreneurship. Meanwhile, the second team led by Dr. Ellianawati raised the theme of Utilization of Local Wisdom in STEM-Based Science Learning.

The Coordinator of the MGMP Science Junior High School of Tegal Regency, M Lutfi, explained that this activity took place in four sessions from May to July 2024, with online and offline formats. The third session was held at SMP Negeri 1 Slawi and was attended by 50 participants from the Subject Teachers’ Conference (MGMP) Science Junior High School of Tegal Regency. Participants, who were grouped based on MGMP clusters, received guidance and the opportunity to present the results of activities from the previous session.

This training is very useful for improving the quality of student-focused learning, with competent speakers. One of the interesting materials is making aromatherapy candles from used cooking oil, including online promotion and sales training. The goal is for teachers to be able to train students’ entrepreneurship, such as in the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project. In addition, teachers are invited to integrate local wisdom into teaching materials and create Student Worksheets (LKPD) based on local wisdom.
