On 7-14 July 2024 the 15th International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME-15) was held at the International Convention Center in Sydney, Australia. ICME-15 is the largest congress in the field of Mathematics Education in the world which is held every 4 years. The congress, which was attended by 2,392 delegates from 97 countries, was opened with remarks by the President of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) and the President of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI). In this congress, 4 plenary lectures, 2 plenary panels, 30 discussion groups, 84 workshops, 54 Topic Study Groups were held, and the three highest awards in the field of mathematics education were awarded, namely: the Emma-Castelnuovo Award, the Hans Freudenthal Award, and the Felix Klein Award. The President and members of the Executive Committee of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) have been appointed for the 2025-2028 term.
Dr rer nat Adi Nur Cahyono MPd from the Center for Research on Mathematics Trails with Digital Technology (mathtrailslab.id) FMIPA Semarang State University (UNNES) received funding from the committee to attend the congress, and participated actively as a delegate and presented a paper on the results of his collaborative project with Austria, England, Finland and Spain about Virtual Reality STEM Trails in the Topic Study Group “The role and the use of technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics at upper secondary and tertiary level” and a poster about STEM Trails as a result of a project with a consortium of universities in Indonesia funded by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture in the Topic Study Group “Popularization of Mathematics”. On the sidelines of the congress agenda, the Math Trails Lab FMIPA UNNES Team also took advantage of the opportunity to hold meetings with potential partners from several countries to discuss projects that were already underway and projects that were planned to be implemented. There are new projects that have been agreed with partners for planned implementation, both collaborative projects between researchers/research groups, between institutions (UNNES and Partner Universities), as well as between Consortiums of Indonesian Universities and universities abroad, with UNNES as leader in Indonesia.
After the congress in Sydney ended, Dr. research carried out by Deakin University together with a consortium of several universities in Southeast Asia supported by the Freudenthal Institute, Utrecht, Netherlands. The conference was held for two days, 15-16 July 2024, consisting of presentations by 4 keynote speakers from Austria, Finland, Taiwan and Indonesia, followed by PhD panel discussions, invited lectures, Professor panels, Co-design with teachers, and Parallel sessions. Dr rer nat Adi Nur Cahyono MPd together with Prof Dr Zsolt Lavicza were the Keynote Speakers by presenting material on Fostering teachers’ innovations: Integrating augmented/virtual reality and 3D printing into teacher education’. After holding the conference, on July 17 2024, a Roundtable was held as a discussion forum between several universities to discuss potential collaboration programs to be implemented in the future.
The two overseas activities carried out are part of support for increasing UNNES’s reputation in the global world and strengthening UNNES’ cooperation with international networks that contribute to achieving UNNES’s vision of becoming a University with a World Reputation and a Pioneer of Excellence in Education with a Conservation Mindset.
