Semarang, 12 June 2024 – Semarang State University (UNNES) Undergraduate Physics Study Program in collaboration with the Yogyakarta National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) held a student thesis exam. Rio Agustian Gilang Fernando, a student from the Undergraduate Physics study program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UNNES, successfully defended his thesis entitled “Prostate Cancer Therapy Dosage Analysis with Boron Neutron Capture Therapy using the PHITS version 3.32 program”.
Rio’s research focuses on analyzing therapeutic doses for prostate cancer using the Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) technique. This method involves the use of the PHITS version 3.32 program, a simulation software used to model particle physics and radiation processes. It is hoped that this thesis can make a significant contribution to the development of cancer therapy that is more effective and has minimal side effects.
In the process of working on this thesis, Rio was guided by two expert lecturers, namely Dr. Pratiwi Dwijananti, M.Si from the UNNES Undergraduate Physics Study Program as Supervisor 1, and Prof. Ir. Yohanes Sarjdono, APU from BRIN Yogyakarta as Supervisor 2. Guidance from these two experts provided Rio with much needed guidance and support in completing his research.
Rio’s thesis examination was carried out strictly and full of enthusiasm, attended by two examining lecturers from the UNNES Physics study program, namely Prof. Dr. Masturi, M.Si and Dr. Sunarno, S.Sc., M.Sc. The two examiners provided various input and critical questions which Rio managed to answer well, showing deep understanding and high competence in the field under study.
This collaboration between UNNES and BRIN Yogyakarta shows a strong commitment to supporting student research and improving the quality of higher education through research collaboration involving leading institutions. The hope is that Rio’s research can become the basis for further development in the field of cancer therapy and have a positive impact on the wider community.
This thesis examination event was not only an important moment for Rio Agustian Gilang Fernando but also marked a step forward in the synergy between the academic world and national research. It is hoped that support from various parties will continue to flow to strengthen and expand the scope of research carried out by UNNES students.
