On May 6 2024, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Semarang State University (UNNES) held training on the theme of compiling and publishing textbooks and reference books as part of efforts to improve the written work of lecturers in this environment. This event is a strategic step in supporting improving the quality of education and literacy in the academic community.
In this training, three main resource persons provided in-depth insight into the process of compiling and publishing a quality book. Associate Prof. Dr. Khanom Binti Simarani, an Associate Professor from the Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia, opened the session by providing material on how to make a good reference book. With his extensive experience in research and scientific publications, Dr. Khanom provided practical tips and guidance for participants in compiling informative and quality reference books.
The next session was led by Dr. Maisarah binti Hasbullah, also from the Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. Dr. Maisarah discussed in detail how to make textbooks that are effective and suit students’ needs. With his teaching-oriented approach, Dr. Maisarah provides invaluable guidance for lecturers to produce textbooks that support the student learning process well.
The final speaker was Joko Irawan Mumpuni, Director of Andi Publishing. In this session, he explained in detail the process of applying for ISBNs for textbooks and reference books, along with the conditions needed and the estimated time needed for the benefits to be felt. This knowledge is very important for writers and editors who want to publish their works officially and be recognized internationally.
“Through this training, we hope that the lecturers at FMIPA UNNES will be more skilled in compiling quality textbooks and reference books and can obtain official publications for their works,” said one of the training committee members. “We are very grateful to the sources who have provided us with valuable insight and knowledge.”
The training participants, consisting of lecturers and researchers in various fields of science at FMIPA UNNES, showed high enthusiasm during all sessions of the event. They actively ask questions and discuss, and plan to apply the knowledge they gain in the practice of preparing their own books.
It is hoped that this training on preparing and publishing textbooks and reference books can be a good first step in increasing the quantity and quality of academic literature produced by lecturers at FMIPA UNNES, as well as strengthening their position in the increasingly competitive world of higher education.
