Semarang, 22 March 2024 – In commemoration of World Water Day which falls on 22 March, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Semarang State University (FMIPA UNNES) carried out clean water checking activities around the campus. This activity aims to ensure the quality of the water used by the UNNES academic community so that it is protected from all kinds of diseases caused by water that is not suitable for consumption.
The team from FMIPA UNNES consisting of lecturers and students from the Chemistry and Biology study programs carried out a series of water quality tests. Water samples were collected from various points around the campus environment, including from drinking water taps and other water sources frequently used by students and staff.
Dean of FMIPA UNNES, Prof. Dr. Edy Cahyono, M.Sc., stated that this activity was part of the faculty’s social responsibility in maintaining the health and safety of all campus residents. “Good water quality is very important to support a healthy learning environment. “By checking this, we want to ensure that the water used in the FMIPA UNNES environment is free from dangerous contaminants and safe for consumption,” said Prof. Dr. Edy Cahyono, M.Si..
Interim results from laboratory tests show that the majority of water samples around FMIPA UNNES meet the clean water quality standards set by the Ministry of Health. However, there were several samples that showed bacterial content exceeding the permissible limits, so further action needed to be taken to handle them.
“This discovery is of concern to us and we will immediately coordinate with related parties for further action, such as sterilization and repair of the water filtration system,” added Prof. Dr. Edy Cahyono, M.Si..
It is also hoped that this clean water checking activity can increase the awareness of the UNNES academic community about the importance of maintaining water quality and the environment. Apart from that, FMIPA UNNES plans to make this activity an annual routine agenda in the series of commemorations of World Water Day.
With this proactive step from FMIPA UNNES, it is hoped that all campus residents can continue to enjoy clean, safe water and avoid various diseases caused by polluted water. This activity is also a form of UNNES contribution in supporting environmental sustainability and the health of the community around campus.
