Diversification and Branding of Batik: FMIPA Unnes Community Engagement Team Holds Batik Ecoprint Training

The Community Engagement Team of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) conducted a batik diversification training for the Puspandari batik group in Ngesrepbalong Village, Kendal Regency.

Led by Prof. Dr. Margareta Rahayuningsih, M.Si, the team chose batik ecoprint as one of the batik development products, utilizing plants as motifs and natural dyes.

The batik diversification group consisted of four lecturers from UNNES: Dr. Wandah Wibawanto, S.Sn. M.Ds., Stephani Diah P. S.Si., M. Hum., Ir. Nur Rahayu Utami, M.Si., and Kartika Widyaningrum.

“Batik ecoprint was chosen due to its current trend, and its selling price is also quite high,” explained Prof. Dr. Margareta Rahayuningsih, M.Si.

The activity was attended by dozens of members from the Puspandari batik group.

“The ecoprint technique used in this training is the steam or steam-bath technique. It involves arranging leaves with good color pigmentation on treated fabric, rolling it up, and steaming it for 90 minutes,” she continued.

The team hopes that this training activity can enhance the quality of batik produced by the Puspandari group.

“It can also be directed towards producing small souvenirs such as pencil cases, tissue holders, small bags, etc., which can be sold during tourist visits to Ngesrepbalong Village, Kendal Regency,” she concluded.
