Semarang, August 22, 2023 – The Master’s and Doctoral Programs of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) held a public lecture highlighting the importance of the role of postgraduate education in preparing excellent and characterized human resources. This offline event was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Nur Qudus, M.T., IPM., Vice Rector IV for Cooperation, Business, and International Relations.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Nur Qudus, M.T., IPM., appreciated the efforts of FMIPA UNNES in organizing an in-depth and relevant public lecture. He emphasized the university’s commitment to continuously support the development of postgraduate education that contributes to the formation of excellent and characterized human resources.

The Dean of FMIPA UNNES, Prof. Dr. Edy Cahyono, M.Sc., also provided a report during the public lecture event. In his report, he presented the accreditation program map and the number of students, as well as human resources, including the distribution of FMIPA faculty members, which is very good with a ratio of 21% Professors, 56% Head Lecturers and Lecturers, and 23% Young Faculty (Teaching Staff and Assistant Professors).

During the occasion, Prof. Dr. Edy Cahyono, M.Sc., also explained the efforts and innovations that the faculty has undertaken to enhance the quality of postgraduate education and its relevance to industry and society’s needs. He highlighted flagship programs, world-class research, and successful international collaborations, while inviting all stakeholders to remain committed to advancing higher education in the fields of science and technology.

The speakers for this public lecture were Prof. Dr. Sri Suning Kusumawardani, S.T., M.T. (Director of Belmawa at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology), Prof. Dr. Wiyanto, M.Si. (Coordinator of Doctoral Program in Science Education), and Dr. Tri Murtini, M.Pd. (Alumnus of Doctoral Program in Mathematics Education). In the discussion focused on the theme ‘Postgraduate Education and Its Role in Preparing Excellent and Characterized Human Resources,’ the speakers shared their perspectives and experiences.

Prof. Sri Suning Kusumawardani emphasized the importance of collaboration between universities and industries in producing human resources that align with the demands of global development. One of the ways is through programs organized by the Ministry of Education, such as the Kampus Merdeka program, which includes domestic programs and flagship programs or MBKM collaborative programs with other Ministries or Institutions. She also explained the four roles of postgraduate education, namely strengthening case-based and project-based learning, enhancing student contributions in relevant studies and research, collaborating to be part of the nation’s problem-solving, and contributing to the preparation of excellent human resources.

On the same occasion, Prof. Wiyanto emphasized that doctoral programs must be able to produce researchers who can adapt to changes in knowledge and technology.

The third speaker, Dr. Tri Murtini, provided a perspective from an alumni point of view, highlighting how postgraduate education helps sharpen analytical and problem-solving skills.

This public lecture was attended by faculty members, students, and academics from FMIPA UNNES who are interested in higher education issues and the formation of human character. Through this informative discussion, it is hoped that knowledge about the role of postgraduate education in producing excellent and characterized human resources will be further elevated and understood by all parties.
