SEMARANG — Dosen Fakultas Ilmu Sosial dan Ilmu Politik (FISIP) Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) melakukan penelitian mengenai penanganan sampah yang terbawa dari perairan darat, khususnya sungai, menuju perairan laut. Penelitian dilakukan untuk mengetahui mekanisme penanganan sampah sebelum terbawa hingga ke laut.

Kegiatan penelitian dilaksanakan pada 26 Juni 2026 di Rumah Pompa Kali Semarang melalui wawancara dan observasi. Informan dalam kegiatan ini adalah petugas Rumah Pompa Kali Semarang dan staf bagian Sumber Daya Air (SDA) Dinas Pekerjaan Umum (PU) Kota Semarang.

Rumah Pompa Kali Semarang pada awalnya dibangun untuk membantu mengendalikan banjir di Kota Semarang. Sistemnya bekerja dengan menyedot air dari sejumlah wilayah yang mengalami genangan, kemudian mengalirkannya ke Kali Semarang dan menampungnya di polder Rumah Pompa Kali Semarang. Air dari polder selanjutnya dipompa untuk dialirkan menuju laut.

Selain mengendalikan banjir, sistem rumah pompa juga membantu menangani sampah yang terbawa aliran air. Pada musim penghujan, debit sungai meningkat dan dapat membawa berbagai jenis sampah, baik organik maupun nonorganik.

Sebelum air masuk ke polder dan mesin pompa, terdapat trap sampah yang berfungsi menahan sampah. Sampah yang tertahan kemudian dibersihkan oleh petugas. Mekanisme ini membuat sampah tidak ikut masuk ke mesin pompa sekaligus mengurangi sampah yang terbawa bersama air menuju laut.

Keberadaan trap sampah juga penting untuk menjaga mesin pompa agar tidak mudah mengalami gangguan atau kerusakan akibat sampah yang terbawa arus.

Hasil observasi menunjukkan bahwa sampah sungai tidak hanya berasal dari masyarakat yang membuang sampah ke sungai. Sampah organik seperti ranting, daun, dan bagian tanaman di bantaran sungai juga dapat terbawa arus ketika terjadi hujan dan banjir. Selain itu, alih fungsi lahan di daerah hulu dapat meningkatkan erosi yang menyebabkan material tanah mengendap di sungai dan mempersempit jalur aliran air.

Temuan tersebut menunjukkan bahwa rumah pompa tidak hanya berperan dalam pengendalian banjir, tetapi juga memberikan manfaat dalam penanganan sampah dari sungai sebelum menuju laut.

Pengelolaan sampah sungai karena itu perlu dilakukan secara terpadu, mulai dari pencegahan sampah di daratan, pengelolaan sungai, hingga penanganan sampah yang terbawa arus. Upaya tersebut penting untuk mengurangi potensi sampah dari daratan yang masuk ke perairan laut.
