PERTH, AUSTRALIA — The Faculty of Education and Psychology (FIPP) at Semarang State University (UNNES) continues to expand its international academic network through a research collaboration with the Graduate School of Education, The University of Western Australia (UWA). This collaboration is specifically aimed at strengthening the role of the Three Centers of Education—family, school, and community—in supporting children’s literacy.
The activity, which took place on September 3–4, 2026, brought together the FIPP UNNES Research Team with Prof. Dr. Grace Oakley, an academic from the Graduate School of Education, The University of Western Australia who has expertise in the field of literacy and literacy education.
The collaboration with Prof. Grace Oakley represents a strategic opportunity for FIPP UNNES to strengthen the development of literacy research through the exchange of knowledge and experience with academics from world-class universities. The University of Western Australia itself is one of the world’s leading universities, ranked 77th in the QS World University Rankings 2026.
The FIPP UNNES Research Team is led by Petra Kristi Mulyani, M.Ed., Ph.D. from the Elementary School Teacher Education Study Program (PGSD), with members Moh Farizqo Irvan, M.Pd. from PGSD, Pradipta Christy Pratiwi, M.Psi., Psychologist. from the Psychology Study Program, and Dr. Nugraheti Sismulyasih SB, M.Pd. from PGSD.
The event, held in a hybrid format, was attended by approximately 20 lecturers and doctoral students from the Graduate School of Education, UWA. In the first session, the FIPP UNNES Research Team presented research findings related to strengthening the role of the Three Centers of Education in supporting children’s literacy development.
The presentation was followed by an interactive academic discussion session. Participants exchanged views on various child literacy issues, strategies for strengthening the literacy ecosystem, and how families, schools, and communities can work together to create an environment that supports the development of children’s literacy skills.
The presence of Prof. Grace Oakley provided a valuable perspective to the discussion, given her expertise in literacy. The exchange of ideas between the FIPP UNNES Research Team and Prof. Grace is expected to enrich research perspectives and open up opportunities for broader literacy studies with international relevance.
The collaboration agenda continued on the second day, not stopping with the guest lecturers. The FIPP UNNES Research Team was invited to a private discussion on the potential for research collaboration between FIPP UNNES and the Graduate School of Education, The University of Western Australia.
During the meeting, both parties discussed opportunities to develop a joint research agenda for implementation in the following year. The collaboration explored encompasses not only joint research but also opportunities for developing scientific publications in reputable international journals and various academic activities that could strengthen the network between the two institutions.
The Head of the FIPP UNNES Research Team, Petra Kristi Mulyani, M.Ed., Ph.D., said that collaboration with world-class academics and educational institutions is an important step to strengthen the quality of educational research at UNNES, especially in the field of children’s literacy.
This collaboration is also part of FIPP UNNES’s commitment to presenting research that is not only relevant to the Indonesian educational context but also has perspectives and contributions to educational discourse at the global level.
Through a collaboration with the Graduate School of Education, The University of Western Australia, FIPP UNNES is expected to strengthen its capacity to build a literacy research ecosystem based on international collaboration. Strengthening the roles of families, schools, and communities as the Three Centers of Education is a crucial aspect in creating an environment that supports the growth of children’s literacy culture and skills.
This activity also supports SDGs 4 (Quality Education) by strengthening research and innovation for quality education, as well as SDGs 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by building international partnerships in the fields of research, publication, and academic capacity development.
This collaboration affirms FIPP UNNES’ commitment to continuously connecting Indonesian educational research with global academic networks, while also opening up space for the birth of joint research and publications that make a real contribution to the development of children’s literacy.
