FIPP Presents UiTM Malaysia Academics to Discuss Augmented Reality for Future Learning

Universitas Negeri Semarang/Faculty of Education and Psychology/Berita/FIPP Presents UiTM Malaysia Academics to Discuss Augmented Reality for Future Learning

The Faculty of Education and Psychology (FIPP) held an international guest lecture featuring two academics from Universiti Teknologi MARA, Professor Ts. Dr. Murizah Kassim and Dr. Suhaili Beeran Kutty. The theme of the event was “Development and Analysis of Augmented Reality in Education for Engineering Equipment Using Mobile Apps: A Comparison Study between Malaysia and Indonesia,” which discussed augmented reality (AR)-based learning innovations in education.

The guest lecture was opened by the Vice Dean I of FIPP, Farid Ahmadi. In his remarks, he stated that current developments in learning require various technological innovations that students and lecturers need to understand. He stated that the use of technology such as augmented reality is a crucial step in creating more creative, interactive, and relevant learning.

The guest lecture was attended by lecturers representing all study programs within FIPP and FIPP student representatives. The presence of speakers from Malaysia provided momentum to strengthen international academic collaboration and broaden participants’ insights into the implementation of digital technology in education.

In her presentation, Prof. Murizah Kassim explained the development of 3D Augmented Reality Mobile Apps of Engineering Devices for Education (ARED) as part of a strategic research collaboration between UiTM and UNNES. The technology was developed using Android smartphones using marker-based augmented reality techniques to interactively display 3D models of engineering devices. Users can scan markers using the phone’s camera, causing 3D objects to appear and rotate up to 360 degrees.

She also explained that AR technology is part of the development of the metaverse, enabling the integration of the real and digital worlds through a more immersive learning experience. In research, the ARED application was tested on engineering students and received positive feedback in terms of design, ease of use, and learning effectiveness.

Meanwhile, Dr. Suhaili Beeran Kutty presented a presentation titled “Usability Analysis of Marker-Based Augmented Reality Application for the Microcontroller Study.” The session explained how augmented reality can make learning more interactive, increase student engagement, aid in the visualization of abstract concepts, and support independent and distance learning.

He also explained that developing a marker-based AR application can help students understand microcontroller components through interactive 3D object visualizations. Usability research conducted with engineering students showed that most participants found the application easy to use, engaging, and supported a better learning experience.

Through this activity, FIPP demonstrated its commitment to supporting digital technology-based learning innovation and strengthening international academic networks between Indonesia and Malaysia. The guest lecture activity is expected to inspire lecturers and students to continue developing innovative augmented reality-based learning media in various educational fields.
