Sebelumnya bernama IKIP semarang, Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) memiliki sejarah yang panjang dalam bidang Pendidikan. Berikut perkembangan UNNES dari tahun ke tahun

1960-1963

Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (FKIP) dan Sekolah Tinggi Olahraga (STO)

Pada tahun 1960, Kursus B-I dan Kursus B-II digabungkan ke Universitas Diponegoro untuk membentuk Fakultas Pendidikan. Pada tahun 1963, Departemen Pendidikan Jasmani, yang sebelumnya merupakan bagian dari Kursus B-II, dipisahkan dan menjadi Sekolah Ilmu Keolahragaan (STO) yang berdiri sendiri di bawah naungan Departemen Keolahragaan.

1963-1965

Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (IKIP) cabang Yogyakarta Semarang

Pada tahun 1963, diterbitkan sebuah Dekret Presiden untuk pendirian Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (IKIP) sebagai lembaga pendidikan tenaga kependidikan. Saat itu, hanya ada empat IKIP di Jakarta, Bandung, Malang, dan Yogyakarta. FKIP Universitas Diponegoro, yang dianggap belum mampu berdiri sendiri, ditunjuk sebagai cabang Semarang dari IKIP Yogyakarta.

1965-1999

IKIP Semarang

Cabang IKIP Yogyakarta di Semarang tumbuh pesat. Untuk mengarahkan perkembangannya dengan lebih efektif di masa depan, sambil menunggu Dekret Presiden, Menteri PTIP menerbitkan Surat Keputusan Menteri No. 40 tahun 1965 tanggal 8 Maret 1965, yang menetapkan cabang IKIP Yogyakarta di Semarang sebagai IKIP Semarang yang terdiri dari Fakultas Pendidikan, Fakultas Pendidikan Bahasa dan Seni, Fakultas Ilmu Sosial, Fakultas Ilmu Pasti dan Fakultas Pendidikan Teknik. Pada tahun 1977, program pendidikan guru di bidang olahraga kembali ke institusi induknya dalam entitas baru yang disebut Fakultas Pendidikan Ilmu Keolahragaan (FKIK).

1999-sekarang

Universitas Negeri Semarang

Dengan diterbitkannya Keputusan Presiden Nomor 124 tahun 1999 mengenai transformasi IKIP Semarang, Bandung, dan Medan menjadi universitas, IKIP Semarang kemudian berganti nama menjadi Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES). Pada tahun 2000, nama-nama fakultas di dalam UNNES diubah menjadi: Fakultas Ilmu Pendidikan, Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni, Fakultas Ilmu Sosial, Fakultas Matematika dan IPA, Fakultas Teknik, Fakultas Ilmu Keolahragaan, dan Program Pascasarjana. Pada tahun 2006, didirikan Fakultas Ekonomi, dan setahun setelahnya, terbentuklah Fakultas Hukum di UNNES. Pendirian kedua fakultas baru ini merupakan konsekuensi dari menjadi sebuah universitas.
