Student engagement within the Bachelor Program of Biology Education at FMIPA UNNES is orchestrated through a comprehensive ecosystem designed to foster personal, academic, and professional growth. This engagement is strategically categorized into five core pillars of student development: Interests and Talents, Reasoning, Student Welfare, Professionalism, and Entrepreneurship. The program ensures that extracurricular activities, festivals, and workshops are not merely supplementary but are vital for honing specialized talents. Simultaneously, academic reasoning is deepened through public lectures, seminars, and rigorous academic competitions. To ensure a supportive environment, the university provides robust welfare services, including mental and physical health counseling and social assistance, which are balanced with professional preparation initiatives such as internships, leadership training, and job fairs. Furthermore, entrepreneurship is actively cultivated through business incubators and competitions, such as those focusing on bio-based products, to prepare students for the global competitive market.
The sustainability of these programs is guaranteed through a structured and continuous mentoring model, complemented by a digital “Competition Map” (Peta Kompetisi) managed by the study program and the student achievement team to monitor external opportunities and successes. At the department level, students are engaged through specialized semi-autonomous organizations under the Biology Student Association (Hima Biologi). These include the Green Community (GC), which focuses on habitat and biodiversity conservation, and Pelatuk Bird Study Club (BSC), specializing in Indonesian ornithology. Plant-based interests are facilitated by Cempaka Bio Farm (CBF), while scientific and linguistic skills are sharpened at the Jasmina Study Center (JSC). Innovative bio-entrepreneurship is specifically channeled through the Genuine Fermentation Club (GFC), which focuses on food and non-food fermentation products, while spiritual development is nurtured by the Forum Amaliah Ilmiah Islam (Familia).
A. HIMABIO
National Seminar in Ecoenzyme 2024
A national seminar was held in 2024 by the Biology Student Association of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Semarang (FMIPA UNNES). The event aimed to enhance knowledge and broaden participants’ understanding of environmental issues and sustainable innovation. Carrying the theme, “Ecoenzyme Optimization Study as an Implementation of the Zero-Waste Movement to Address Environmental Instability,” the seminar focused on the utilization of ecoenzymes as an alternative solution to promote environmentally friendly practices and reduce waste. The event took place on Sunday, 13 October 2024, in the Hall on the third floor of the D12 Building, FMIPA UNNES. It was attended by students of the Biology and Biology Education study programs from both UNNES and other institutions, as well as lecturers and members of the general public.
The seminar featured Prof. Dr. Siti Harnina Bintari, M.S., and Yenita Sanjaya as speakers. They presented the concept of ecoenzymes, their benefits in daily life, and the implementation of the zero-waste movement in addressing increasingly complex environmental challenges. Through this activity, participants gained a deeper understanding of sustainable organic waste management, environmental pollution reduction, and simple innovations that can be applied in everyday life. The event also included a discussion and question-and-answer session, providing participants with the opportunity to further explore the seminar’s theme.
Furthermore, the seminar was expected to raise awareness among the young generation about the importance of environmental preservation through the application of sustainability principles and effective waste management practices. The event also served as an educational platform for students and the wider community to understand the significance of science- and technology-based environmental innovation. Through this seminar, participants were expected not only to gain theoretical knowledge but also to be motivated to adopt environmentally friendly lifestyles in their daily lives.
Information and Technology Workshop
An Information and Technology Workshop was organized by the Biology Student Association of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Semarang (FMIPA UNNES), as one of its annual programs aimed at enhancing students’ digital skills and creativity. Carrying the theme, “Building Creativity by Improving Editing Skills for Learning in the Digital Era,” the event sought to improve participants’ digital editing competencies while fostering creativity as an adaptation to the ongoing digitalization of technology and education. The workshop was held from 8 June to 23 July 2024 in the Hall on the third floor of the D12 Building, FMIPA UNNES. It was open to UNNES students, members of the general public, and the 2024 Biology Student Association board members.
The series of activities, which consisted of seminars, training sessions, and a creative video competition, was designed to provide participants with hands-on learning experiences. The event featured Clara Nita Fitriany and Diman Irawan Ilya Ulumuddin, S.Sn., M.Kom., as speakers, who delivered materials on editing techniques, creative idea development, and the use of digital media as tools for learning and self-development. Participants gained a deeper understanding of the importance of editing skills in supporting academic activities, information dissemination, and the rapidly growing creative industry in today’s digital era.
Through this workshop, participants were expected to enhance their technical skills in producing creative videos and foster innovation in creating engaging and educational content. Although the number of participants did not reach the expected target, the event was successfully conducted and achieved its educational objectives. The 2024 Information and Technology Workshop served as a valuable learning platform, providing participants with new experiences and motivation to continuously develop their potential in digital technology and the creative industry.
Integrated Biology Scientific Week XXXI, 2025
The 31st Integrated Biology Scientific Week (PIBT), organized by the Biology Student Association of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Semarang (FMIPA UNNES), was a national scientific event held under the theme, “Footsteps of Great Scientists: Building an Exploratory, Synergistic, and Innovative Spirit.” The event aimed to enhance the quality of the younger generation by developing academic abilities, creativity, and a competitive spirit in the field of biology.
PIBT 2025 was conducted in a hybrid format and featured several competitions, including the National Biology Infographic Competition, the National Biology Essay Competition, and the National Senior High School Biology Competition (SHSBC). The preliminary stages, including registration and submission of entries, were conducted online, while the final round of the Olympiad took place offline at Universitas Negeri Semarang. The event attracted participants from various regions across Indonesia, reflecting strong enthusiasm for scientific competition and learning.
Throughout the series of competitions, participants demonstrated creativity, critical thinking, and scientific competence in biology. Beyond serving as a platform for competition, the event also fostered collaboration, innovation, and the development of young scientific talent. Through this activity, participants were encouraged to strengthen their potential and prepare themselves to face future challenges in education, science, and technology.
Integrated Biology Scientific Week XXX, 2024
The 30th Integrated Biology Scientific Week (PIBT) 2024, organized by the Biology Student Association of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Semarang (FMIPA UNNES), was a national-level scientific competition aimed at enhancing the academic quality, creativity, and competitiveness of the younger generation in the field of biology. Carrying the theme, “Future Generation of Scientists: Sharpening Intelligence, Competitiveness, and Global Perspective,” the event reflected the spirit of fostering a generation that is innovative, competitive, and capable of responding to scientific developments at both national and global levels. The competition was open to active university students from various majors across Indonesia for the infographic competition and high school students nationwide for the Biology Olympiad.
PIBT 2024 featured two main competition categories: an infographic competition for university students and a Biology Olympiad for high school students. The series of activities was conducted in several stages, including participant registration, a technical meeting, submission of entries, evaluation, announcement of finalists, finalist presentations, and the announcement of winners. Through the infographic competition, participants were challenged to present biological information in a creative, engaging, and communicative manner, encouraging the development of visual communication and innovative thinking skills. Meanwhile, the Biology Olympiad was designed to strengthen participants’ academic abilities, scientific reasoning, and competitive spirit in biology.
The event provided a platform for participants to develop their academic potential while fostering self-confidence and sportsmanship. In addition, PIBT 2024 supported the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, particularly in the areas of education and scientific development. The participation of students from various regions across Indonesia demonstrated the event’s role in nurturing young talent in science and technology. Through this activity, participants were expected to broaden their knowledge, strengthen their critical thinking skills, enhance their creativity, and develop a wider global perspective in facing future scientific challenges.
B. INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY SERVICE (GIAT) AND SCHOOL FIELD RECOGNITION (LANTIP)

The School of Undergraduate Studies (UGS), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Kuala Lumpur, officially welcomed students from Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) participating in the International Community Service Program (GIAT Internasional). The reception marked the beginning of an international collaborative experience, offering students the opportunity to connect with academic partners, exchange perspectives, and prepare for the community engagement activities ahead.

The International Community Service Program (GIAT Internasional) concluded with a closing ceremony attended by representatives of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), local community leaders, and the UNNES student delegation. The event celebrated the successful completion of the program, highlighting the valuable outcomes of international collaboration, cultural exchange, and community engagement, while further strengthening the partnership among UTM, UNNES, and the local community.
