Semarang, 18 June 2026 – As part of its commitment to advancing research excellence and societal relevance, the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) of Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) organized a workshop titled “Building Global Research for Sustainable Impacts” at the Borobudur Hall, 3rd Floor of the LPPM Building. The event brought together UNNES lecturers and researchers to strengthen their capacity in designing and conducting research with broader societal impact. Beyond academic publications and scholarly outputs, the workshop emphasized the importance of research that generates tangible benefits for communities, supports evidence-based policymaking, addresses industry needs, and contributes to environmental sustainability.
The workshop featured Professor Mindy Blaise, Vice Chancellor’s Research Fellow and Director of the Centre for People, Place, & Planet, a strategic research centre at Edith Cowan University, Western Australia. The event commenced with opening remarks from the Chair of LPPM UNNES, Prof. Dr. R. Benny Riyanto, S.H., M.Hum., C.N., followed by the signing of an Initial Arrangement and the presentation of a commemorative token of appreciation to the guest speaker.
In her presentation, Professor Blaise highlighted that contemporary research is no longer measured solely by scientific publications, but also by its ability to create meaningful change and contribute to sustainable development. Participants gained valuable insights into the concept of impact-driven research, including methods for identifying issues that are relevant to societal needs and strategies for assessing research outcomes through measurable indicators. The workshop also underscored the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration and partnerships with various stakeholders to ensure that research findings can be implemented more effectively and on a broader scale.
The interactive discussion sessions provided participants with an opportunity to exchange perspectives and experiences regarding the challenges of translating research into practice. Key topics raised included the gap between research outcomes and community needs, as well as the need for more effective strategies to disseminate research findings. The workshop was conducted in an interactive format, combining presentations and practical guidance on developing frameworks for impactful research. Participants also explored strategies to enhance research funding opportunities and strengthen the long-term sustainability of research outcomes beyond project completion.
Through the implementation of this workshop, UNNES seeks to foster a research ecosystem that promotes innovation and long-term societal value. The initiative is expected to contribute to the development of research that addresses complex contemporary challenges while supporting the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). By strengthening the culture of impact-driven research, UNNES reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that research serves not only as a means of advancing knowledge but also as a strategic instrument for creating sustainable and transformative change for society.
